Clicking coming from engine bay

When i occasionally take this up to highway speed when i would slow down i could hear a clicking coming from the engine bay. recently it has been happening once its warm. i checked all fluids, everything seems fine. its not to nasty of a click so i don't think its rod knock but i know i should be rebuilding the motor soon anyways so if anyone has any clue what this is let me know otherwise i can record it and post it here if i wasn't clear enough.

If you can't duplicate the noise in the driveway by varying engine speed that pretty much eliminates the engine and accessories. Only in motion would most likely be axle related possibly U joints .

Is your jack and handle tight? Mine was rattling around at one point.

My first choice is to swap one quart of motor oil for one quart of Marvel Mystery Oil...until the next filter change.

it is definitely engine related. I've been looking around some say it's the fuel pump others say sticky rockers. this motor needs a rebuild anyway so im probably just going to do both. at first i heard it and thoght it was a valve hitting the piston

I'd say pull the valve covers. That sounds like a rocker ticking.

Before watching your video I was thinking lifter / rocker noise, and you video confirms that. Yes exhaust manifold leaks can sometimes sound similar, but the timing of a run on the highway then the noise really fits with lifters not exhaust. How is the oil pressure when your at higher speeds, does it drop off then? If yes then it could be an oil pump problem or clogged pick up screen. If your thinking of rebuilding it this is just one more sign it needs to be done.

It's cold outside and may beat walking lol.

I like your yellow pick-em-up..but that tap seems fairly pronounced. We may not have much time to consider options.

Bout the only thing you can do for fast answers:


-Check the oil lol.

-Get a stool.

-Find a stick.
Bout two feet long or so, broomstick or similar-wood is preferred

-start engine and stand on stool, stick in hand.

Placing the hot end of the stick on the exhaust manifold- where it comes out of the cylinder head- in attempt to determine which cylinder is making the tap.. Cup the cold end of the stick to your ear.
Verify diagnosis listening from the valve cover.

I had a fuel pump that clicked pretty loud for a while until it completely crapped out in the middle of the road.

Exhaust manifold leak to me. My 305 sounded like that when I first got it, used, put on new mr. gaskets and new ARP manifold bolts, now quiet and fixed. Since it ticks I suspect its leaking at one of the exhaust ports.

I haven't tried this and don't know if it would work but you could maybe sequentially remove each spark wire from the distributor, turn engine off between plug removals, and see if tick goes away after restarting. I would think if pulling one of the wires eventually stops the ticking that's the cylinder the exhaust manifold is leaking at.
