Best sounding squarebody mufflers?

I've seen that butt crack thing before... The outer layer pf the twin waled exhaust tube has rusted enough to yield to the pressure from a muffler clamp. The inner tube just folds over like this.

I have had good success painting exhaust tubing. I used an aluminum heat paint. Just be sure to degrease the tubes if you want to paint. And if you weld on, full wled or just a tack, remember to crawl back under with the heat paint rattle can and hit the welds.
It's still going to rust, but will in fact take longer. Or you can clean up rusty shadows that will eventually return and hit with the paint. Depends how much you love the underside of your truck!

Alright well im going to see what I can do to minimize the buttcrack. Maybe I can bend it back into shape somehow. In the meantime I prefer to clamp on the exhaust since I'm not sure if its the sound I want yet. Once I figure that out I will probably weld it together.

See how far that butt crack goes in, if its only a few inches just sawzall it along the length and then should be able to twist it out.

As for paint I have had pretty good luck with rustoleums BBQ paint.

Get a tail pipe expander to get that folded over thing stretched back round

I just realized though, the muffler that I bought is straight and the old one was offset. How can I get it to fit?

Return it for proper alignment otherwise your going to have to cut more tailpipe out and get one of those ghetto flexy exhaust pipes and we're getting real ghetto at this point. May as well break out the cost hangers to hang it all up too.

No you won't. An exhaust shop can simply make the cuts and weld it. The muffler would already be installed and all of this discussion moot if he'd just taken it in right after getting the glasspack.

No you won't. An exhaust shop can simply make the cuts and weld it. The muffler would already be installed and all of this discussion moot if he'd just taken it in right after getting the glasspack.

I agree an exhaust shop can easily do it. He has some reservation about taking it to a shop for some reason, that's why I said how he could do it.

I agree, nothing discussed yet would be any problem for a shop that can do exhaust.

Well I just discovered someone across the street form me died of coronavirus so I'm trying my best to stay home. I'd also rather clamp in the muffler rather than welding it in because I'm not 100% sure if I'll like the sound. I also doubt any local exhaust shops are doing work at the moment.

That's understandable. You can do what I said with flexible pipe till you decide if you like the sound or want to have it professionally installed

Band clamps also work nice for temporary placement, if you dont like it they come right back off, no crushed pipe either
