Anyone prefer the mini starters?

i see these all over the place and might have to put a new starter in soonish. what is different about these other than the fact they don't weigh 200 pounds.

I like them for more crank power on higher compression engines and solenoid isn't as close to headers. Also, since they are smaller, is easier to drop with headers in place and easier to install one handed while contorted on your back trying to get a bolt threaded, lol.

Definitely. I went with the Powermaster 9526 mini for my hard-starting 454 with full length headers.

I've been using one of the cheap ones from DB Electrical in my daily driver for over 4 years now and around 30,000 miles. Installed it when I started having heat soak issues with headers. At the time I just wanted to try one out and see if it fixed my starting problem but I ended up just leaving it in there.

Smaller, lighter, and all around a better starter as far as I know. Heh, just can't stand the way they sound.

I do prefer the sound of the old ones, as well, but that’s about it besides it’s already there, and you can pretty much indefinitely rebuild/reman the old unit. I don’t know if there’s a savings there over a period of say 30 or 40 years, but I could see that being the case. Clearance issues, ease/difficulty of installation, and the capacity of a more modern starter make it an attractive thing to do.

Unless you have a high compression engine and need it? I am cool with lifting a heavier starter especially since it costs like 1/3 the cost of those.

the Vortex starter is for sure that right decision :imo:
my experience had only bad luck with the kind of starter OP askin about tho.

i tried TWO different ones in daily use and both failed in short order.
By the time you CUT YOUR PLUGS OFF to put the big assed o-ring u gotta run 12V CONSTANT through, sure you can get another one...in the mail but lotta people have to go places lol.
The argument for parts store handy cant be argued.

wait...

beats changin your starter plugs back in a pinch.
I mean I guess it would...:rolleyes:

I'm mainly envious of the mounting plate this one has. everyone else I've been talking to is aware of my starter alignment issues.

You can beat that price with DB Electrical. Sold on amazon or their website. Should be able to get one for ~$55, no core. Search for DB Electrical here in the forums and you'll see a lot have used them. Take that money saved and get something else.....like a trans cooler (first thing that came to mind lol).

@Camar068 that was the one I got. I started this thread because in the last 3 months I have replaced almost 4 starters for different reasons, mainly faulty components so I'm just hoping this newer starter doesn't have any of those problems.
