Is this a 3 wire or a 1 wire. I see 3 wires but not sure.

That is a 10SI alternator. As you can see, not a 1 wire.

You can replace the regulator inside the alternator and convert it to a one wire. Not really what you should do. One wire alternators are what the street rod guys like because less wires to use on a clean engine.

One wire alternators do not charge as well at idle.

Not to mention one wire alternators have no warning lamp function. Meaning your first clue there is a charging system problem is dropping system voltage (assuming you have a volt gauge) or the engine stops running.


One wire alternators were originally designed for tractors or other industrial applications.

The real “advantage” of one wire alternators is that they take zero knowledge to install. Most people are lazy, and don’t know how to properly diagnose charging system problems, or are just too stubborn to learn.

Fix the truck right, these trucks are easy to work on.
