292 I6 Suburban?

Hi All,

I'm curious if anybody has any first hand experience with a I6 292 powered 4wd Suburban. I have a thing for straight 6 engines, so I'm curious about things like mileage, drivability etc.

That's cool, I've never seen a 6 cyl Suburban much less a 292! K20?

I don't know- I have never seen one either. But, It's a thought I have had to build a suburban with a 292, SM465,and 208 or 205.

Yep my thoughts exactly. I'm thinking that a 292, 465/208 to 3.73's with 35's would be plenty of gearing. Those straight sixes can lope down to pretty low RPM's and still have enough torque to get the job done. I had an old FJ55 with similar gearing and it could crawl just fine down to about 300 rpm and still have torque. I might just have to do start looking around for a 292 and start gathering parts, put them all together, then buy a shell of a vehicle when I've got the drivetrain ready. I have a Suburban but don't want to necessarily make it undriveable for as long as it would take to build this.

That’s what’s in my 1981 GMC K2500. I am taking out the I6 and putting in an LS or Big Block. Not a fan of 6 bangers.

My 81 has the 4:10 axles. That would make it even better but I am yanking the 6…….I think?, you guys might have me just keep it in there. I don’t know now. Thanks……hahahahahahaha

I like the I6 also.I've only owned the American motors sixes,and one slant 6 in a 73 Plymouth Duster.But with todays technology,I can get close to the same mpg out of a modern v8 nowdays.So,I own a 350 in a chevy truck,that mpg sux,and a hemi in a Ram truckthat gets 16-20mpg.I still really like those old sixes tho.And the mileage w/a six in a Suburban couldnt be very good.At least as bad as a small v8,I would think.
