1985 c10 step side 4speed manual transmission exploded view

Newbie
I just bought a 1985 c10 it has the 3 speed OD (4 speed) in it. I think it is stuck in OD. 1st and 2nd are so long it's hard to believe that's normal. I have only driven it home and around the hood. I had to put power steering on it to make it user friendly. With the wide tires it was a bear to drive with a manual steering box.
Now the next issue is to figure out this tranny and its solenoid. I can't seem to find much out about it. Does anyone have an exploded view diagram of the tranny? hate to pull the thing it is getting cold out there and I am getting old...the two don't mix well

When you say "1st and 2nd are so long" do you mean the gear ratios? Or the amount the lever moves when shifting?

It's a pretty long throw when changing gears. A deeper first gear (higher numerical ratio) would be nice, especially to help get rolling when trailering.

As far as finding an exploded diagram you will want to search for "MY6 New Process A833" trans info.

I mean I don't have to shift out of 1st gear for awhile
I will hook up the speedometer later on today.feels like 30 to 35 mph. I would think I would have to shift sooner. I need to prove out the rear end final drive ratio before I go nuts over it. I just got the truck so I need to figure it out

I read some where 1st gear ratio is 1.9

looks like the rear ratio is a 3.08
explains a lot . with the aftermarket wheels and tires no need for OD. it just dog's out the engine.
I'm going to have to change the rear or the transmission to make it more drivable

Yes - 3.73 is a nice choice.

That is the equivalent of a 3.42 gear without overdrive.
