hey, just was looking for advice on replacing my power steering pump and steering gear. im pretty new to working on these, and wasn't sure 100 percent how to go bout doing it. But the system leaks pretty bad, and I just got tired of it so im revamping the whole system. I have the right parts coming, got them from LMC truck. just need some pointers.
1. taking the belt off. no obvious tensioner, do you just take the pulley off and the belt comes off at the same time?
2. how do you take off and and install the new steering gear? does it bolt to the chassis and steering shaft and all in a certain way? I don't have much experience in that particular aspect.

installing new pressure lines, return hoses etc is obviously a simple thing wont be difficult. the main thing was just how to properly install the new pump and gear. any advice is appreciated.
thanks alot

There's a bolt on the pump bracket that will let it move in towards the engine and let you get the belt off. After that you just have to take out the remaining bolts that hold it to the engine. With the '77, I'm not sure, but I think there's a nut that locks the pully to the pump. If that's the case you can use a wrench to hold the pully while you use another wrench to get the nut off. Then you can pull it off by hand.

The steering gear is a bit of a pain, but you have to either take the pitman arm off the gear or from the drag link. Probably easier to pull it off of the drag link. There are four bolts that hold it to the frame and then there's the rag joint that attaches the column to the gear. A little juggling and it'll come out, just don't drop it on yourself.

I just did all this not that long ago, but forgot to get pictures while I was actually doing the R&R.

Cool thanks. I saw that bolt on the pump bracket this morning when i was scoping out how it needed to be done. thats pretty straightforward. the gear seems like it will be pain like you're sayin, but i'll try your suggestion and see how it works. parts arent here yet but I just wanted to get an idea first.
Thanks again
