Got the standard 3 wire alternator and I am flabbergasted. The excitor wire has the required 12 volts when the wire is unplugged from the alternator. When I plug the excitor wire into the alternator, the bolts drop to 2.5 which obviously doesn’t start the alternator. What causes the the volts to drop when the excitor is plugged into the alternator?

Got a 73 gmc 2500 454.

Thinking a broken wire, could confirm by placing a amp meter inline with the plug to see
