1973-79 K5 Cheyenne Quarter Panel Emblem Restoration

I bought some old cheyenne emblems and gave them a little fresh up before putting them on my K5.
One emblem was beyond restoration, too much chrome was chipped off.
Lucky me that I bought 3.

Cleaned them from sand an dirt with hot water, soap and a brass brush.

Removed the paint with paint stripper (Brake fluid works too but takes ages)

Degreased 2x with silicone cleaner.

Used hot glue to mask off the parts that will be painted or stay chrome.

Spraypaint with primer and 2 layers of semigloss black.

Painted the yellow and orange parts.

I used one shot lettering enamel and a thin high quality brush.
191L imitation gold and 124L orange.
The orange is pretty close to the color my new k5 blazer emblems have.

That hot glue trick is a good idea! I've always just sprayed the paint and then wiped it off the raised areas before it dries.

I did that before but i had to do an extra pass with the color to get it really nice without darker spots.

It's the chrome emblem with the black and red letters? You could spraypaint all and wipe off the raised area as it is like a plate. First pass red masking the black parts with tape and then masking the red letters and to the black pass. Would be way faster than painting and look like original.

Never done that before. So it's all new to me. I'll try to get some pictures

Just give it a try. I did my first emblem 3 times till I was satisfied with the result. Good thing is you can remove the paint as often as you want or have to without damaging the emblem

Looks awesome! The good repros of those aren’t cheap. Someone tried to dress my truck up as a gmc. So I have Sierra trim I’ve yet to pop off. Already pulled the grill and tailgate band. I actually really like the plain raised letters of the Chevy tailgate.

If anyone out there in internet land wants to trade my mid 80s Sierra badges for Silverado 30 badges, let me know. I’ll throw in the tailgate band too.

I would imagine the raised thin border around the orange parts was hard to get hot glue onto without hanging over the other parts. Did you just use a normal hot glue gun?

It's a very small glue gun with a tiny nozzle. I think it's for kids, my finger is nearly to big for the trigger
I filled the center and raised parts for the black spray paint. The orange and gold was applied with a brush, so I didn't have to mask it. The elevated parts can be wiped off easily.
