Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

The quickest and cost efficient one I could get my hands on that fit the engine… NAPA P/N 2441603. Not a performance model but it’ll do until can find something better.

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Survey says… Starter. Replaced it yesterday. Wiring was burned up pretty good too and had no fuse links installed. Starts like a champ now. Heat blanket around the new one and a 1/0 positive battery cable too. Good to go!

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Yeah well… I’ll call him and let him know but he was heading out of town on an urgent family thing. I know for a fact he didn’t cause this issue though. Yesterday when I took it in, I witnessed it starting properly at least 5 times before I left. We were all hoping it would show the same...

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

The only other thing I’ve noticed is the headlights are stuck in high beam as the switch will not click to reset them to low beam only.

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Picked up the truck today as the shop couldn’t reproduce the starting issue. It started for them every time… probably 20-30 times over the last day or so. They cleaned up some wiring and added an engine block to chassis ground. It fired right up for me at the shop but now at gas station on the...

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

It did lock in place once actually… I had to crawl out from under the truck to unlock it for my wife so she could turn the key. Thanks for the tip!!

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Yes I was confused… let me be clear… the starter, the key buzzer, the voltmeter in the panel, the red “Fasten Seat Belts” in the panel, and the turn signal indicators all did not work yesterday, however the dome light and headlights did. That’s why I was convinced something broke inside the...

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Yep - it read 14 volts during the entire drive to the shop.

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Yep - but headlights and dome light worked. That’s what started me down the path of a bad key cylinder.

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Agreed… I got reprimanded today for not using a star washer when I cleaned the engine block ground. And for not grounding to the frame.

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

I asked them about that… the two are unrelated. No commonality. Both the factory key and the spare key I have, if you insert they activate buzzer. But once you remove your hand, the key slides out about 1/8 of an inch and the buzzer shuts off. I had to push the key further to make it buzz again...

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Alright, alright, alright… returned to the crime scene today… Battery had 12.36 volts on the meter. Inserted and heard the key buzzer straightaway. Turned key to start, got nothing. Not even a starter clicking. Dead silence, crickets. Headlights work, headlights do not dim upon turning the key...

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

I would agree but the battery and alternator are both less than two weeks old… I didn’t have eyes on the voltmeter when I tried cranking it, but once she went silent, I noticed the voltmeter is registering zero. Just doesn’t seem likely. Two days ago the voltmeter was reading 14 volts and...

Bad Key Cylinder? Nope. Bad Starter!!

Cold start today… 1st attempt: 2 pumps of throttle and half choke, key buzzer sounded as normal and engine nearly started to fire then quit 2nd attempt: one more pump of throttle and full choke, same result 3rd attempt: key buzzer silent, turn the key and nothing… no starter, nothing… dead I...

    Seat Belt Wiring?

1984 GMC K25… along the driver side under the carpet are 3 wire pairs. Orange/white for some light, blue/blue for speaker, and a black/white pair with a small black female connector. I’ve heard about wiring connected to the seat belt somewhere but I don’t obviously see a spot on my truck for...

    Let’s slay this dragon…

Well well well… I don’t know how but after reassembling the switch this morning and threading it back on the door jamb, the dome light now works properly when either door is open, and the headlight switch too! But wouldn’t you know it… now my fuel gauge is pegged way past full so I clearly...

    Let’s slay this dragon…

These are the wires coming through the door switch hole. White wire is carrying 12V. Brown wire has nothing and fails continuity test. I can’t tell where it goes after the door. There is a similar brown wire going from fuse panel to the left side fuel tank but I’m assuming I’ve followed the...

Further… the dome light also works now when the headlight knob is rotated full left and past the click, but it still won’t turn off when the switch is depressed. Switch tested good for continuity, as expected since it’s brand new.

    Let’s slay this dragon…

Alright so finally got back to one of the original objectives… the pesky dome light. I traced the wire under the driver side carpet. Found no cut wires (but did find some spot rust) and cleaned the connector behind the speaker. After reconnecting, I tested and got 12 volts at the wire before the...

    Let’s slay this dragon…

Update… alternator was only outputting 11 volts after the new battery was installed. Should’ve known this would turn into a two for one special. New alternator going in now. Just finished priming and painting the thru bolt bracket since it was covered in grease/dust. As an added bonus… the...

    Let’s slay this dragon…

I might agree with you but I should’ve said it was reading 8 volts but also varying up and down with acceleration and dropping below 8 with window switches operating.

    Let’s slay this dragon…

Alright, alright, alright… on today’s episode of “sh!t you can’t make up” I decided to remove all of the upside down or blown fuses with those nifty blow glows. Figured since the battery is at least 3 years old, may as well pick up a new one. Good to go, right? What are the frickin’ chances… my...

    Let’s slay this dragon…

Thanks. The white wire from that orange/white pair does in fact run behind the fuse box to above. I can’t see where it goes but assume either the door switch or it’s open ended. There are no courtesy lights installed in this truck. I also noticed in the owner manual that the clock and dome...

    Let’s slay this dragon…

Should both door switches have 2 wires connected to the switch? Driver side had 2 but passenger side only 1.
