Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

DAmn! You caught me! B "Street Takeover" Retty. I will tackle the motor mounts ... which I am not doing today, taking a friend out for his birthday, for drinks at my nice local bar with the pretty young women who are, sadly, it seems, I have concluded after five years, all lesbians. (I love...

Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

I had my transmission shop go over my th350 to see if that was contributing. My driveshaft slop is more like +-15 degrees at the diff. I had trans guys: - Unbolt the TC from flexplate and inspect - Re-bolt them after a 1/3 turn shift - Check my trans mounting. - Remove trans pinion yoke and...

What have you done to your square lately??

Hey!!!!! That looks suspiciously EXACTLE like the valve cover swap I attempted for the second time last weekend. Oh, looking closer, neither set of yours are completely blackened with oil blow-by....

What have you done to your square lately??

Mods -- can we retire this thread? Maybe break off a new one, "What has any mere mortal done to their truck lately?" Amazing work, Sir! For me it's a close race between Inspiration and Shame. ; - }>

What have you done to your square lately??

I'm going to try installing my valve covers and gaskets correctly this time. Then I plan to remove a few spark plugs and inspect them to see if I'm getting detonation or some bad misfire at speed. Do I need to use anti-seize when I re-install them, or will they seat just fine back in the iron...

What have you done to your square lately??

I decided to replace my valve covers finally, since they were leaking and I was getting more blow-by than Jeff Beck. I can't get to our shared parking space behind the apt building, so I have to street park, but I had scored the killer parking right in front. So I started what I thought was a...

Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

I agree, I need to suck it up and get her to the rear-end and differential place. It's not so much the $$$$, more that I need to bethere when they open the rear up and evaluate; hard to get a 1/2 day off work... ;-(

Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

The tire and wheel balance helped, but the very heavy vibration at speed is still there. My "hot-rod" mechanic suggested I may be having a misfire -- but that doesn't explain why it's only at speed and under load. I almost wonder if there is something wrong in my third transmission gear...

Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

I am going to get the wheels rotated and balanced, order new U-joints (tricky, I think the front is 2x1350 and the rear is a conversion 1310x1350) and see if the transmission shop can get me in to inspect the tailhousing and the pinion/shaft bushing(s). Also need to find a drivehaft shop to...

Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

@SquareRoot , My understanding was that rotational slack in the driveshaft meant worn ring & pinion gears in the differential. ETA: also, the condition of noise under load / no noise in coast, incriminates the pinion/ring interface? When useless local mechanic had her on the lift, I thought...

Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

Following up, the vibration under load/throttle, that stops when coasting, makes me think my differential is failing. I surely have almost 1/2 turn of slack/lash in the driveshaft and often a hard CLUNK going into reverse or forward from parked. I'm going to pull the plug and check the gear...

Heavy vibration at highway speed under load

All, Per the title, my '73 C10 (350 sbc, th350c (but TCC not wired up)) has very recently started to vibrate severely on the highway. It seems to maybe start around 35mph, jumps up around 45 and is shaking/rattling through ~75. It is only under throttle -- if I let off the throttle it coasts...

What have you done to your square lately??

If you wanted to DIY the lock change and save $$$, an new ignition lock cylinder can be ordered for ~$25, and a package with a pair of door locks would be $50 max. (I bought my square with no door keys, changing that cylinder was the first thing I did myself. Door and ignition each require a...

What have you done to your square lately??

... so I left with my "Irish Burrito" - with potatoes, no eggs, triple ham - and got to my truck when I realized that if there was a very local place to get this quadrajet gasket, these guys would know! I was partially right. They sent me to Superior Auto Parts in Sylmar. Great place, no...

What have you done to your square lately??

So that huge pile of carbs.... My truck ('73 C10, 350, quadrajet M4V) has been refusing to start cold, requiring a splash of gas in the top of the carb to fire up. I finally decided to address it the morning I had left my gas can at work and had to siphon some gas from my tank into a plastic...

I hit "Like" but that's not really right. Who the heck is buying or leasing all these properties, outbidding and driving established businesses out? It can't all be weed grows like happened in California. Some of it might be property owners not tolerating any "dirty" uses, fearing they may be...

What have you done to your square lately??

Great!. I appreciate the feedback -- I really do get lost looking at the combination of 1973 GM parts catalog scans and the tangled webs of 70's carb/fuel/emission systems. I was just this aftn trying to check my engine with a vac gaunge. I discovered that I need different size/dia vacuum...

What have you done to your square lately??

You know, the little choke cam there is kind of inspirational. Christians might see the symbol of a Dove, those from the Southwest might see a symbolic Phoenix, rising from the intake manifold: Perhaps this represents Icarus, his dreams melted by hubris, or Daedelus his father who knew...

What have you done to your square lately??

I agree. Somehow, even though I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, reading manuals or even looking at diagrams about carbs makes my eyes glaze over. The linkage has a couple tiny studs on the end to keep it on the cam, it looks like I have to un-hook the tiny cotter pin from the other...

What have you done to your square lately??

I finally got up to the shop on Sun aftn, with big plans to change oil, replace valve covers, check fit and filler neck for my new fuel tank.... Ended up commiserating with the boss who was there all weekend catching up on bookkeeping and paperwork, mostly CA sales taxes. Then I spent more...
