Am I crazy to expect more than 10 MPG

My 79 K20, 350/465/205/4:10 on 35's always got about 9 mpg. No matter what. Even with a heavy trailer. Haven't figgered mpg on my current square with similar setup but I bet it's pretty close.

Other than boring fluid changes that pretty much brings us up to now. Didn't do anything over the winter. Itching to get back to it tho. I have all the stuff to convert to a dual pot master cylinder for a split brake system. That's next on my list. Then I'll probably try again with the HEI. One...

After. A vinegar soak does wonders on nasty connectors. Had to replace some parts. The printed circuit was fried. Probably from when someone hooked the temp sender wire to the coil hot post... Dash all works now except the fuel gage.

At this point it was the beginning of September. I had been driving the truck some. In the daytime. Not too far. Remember, no dash but the speedo. I had bought a box of stuff from LMC and was fixing little things. Door lock was one. The ignition switch was wonky and I thought I'd fix that...

Now that I think of it, I think that's the resistor wire that feeds power to the coil. I need to check my wiring diagram. Probably the reason my HEI wouldn't work right. That's high on my list of stuff to do.

Thanks. That's an optical illusion. The yellow wire is actually a brand new one. The fuzz is on another one of those resistor wires. It's got like a cloth cover on it. I don't know where to get new resistor wire and the part in the wrap looks a whole lot better so I left it alone. You can see...

When I got er fired up again the fuel pump on the 230 was leaking. Fixed that and the carb started leaking. Rebuilt the carb and it still leaked. Bought a rebuilt carb for way too much $. It was NOT WORTH IT. The rebuilt carb needed work to be usable. But once I got it going the truck runs...

    64 GMC I1000

A previous owner or 2 had been under the hood "fixing" electrical stuff before. There were several wires to nowhere and a few that went where they didn't belong. Got all that straightened up. Looks a lot better and getting rid of the external regulator cleaned things up a bit. I'm wondering if...

If you look close you'll see a big difference in the wiring between the dirty before pic and the not as dirty after pic. The entire wiring system on the truck was a mess! I started with the engine harness and upgraded to an internal regulator alternator.

Before and after pics in the wrong order. Of course I had to put a new clutch in there since I was there...

    64 GMC I1000

So, since it drove and stopped, against all advice, I drove her home 300 miles. Used 10 quarts of oil but I made it. Got home in the wee hours of May 1st last year. (Had that wrong. Edit) The guy told me it was the original engine. It wasn't. Turned out to be a 250. I ended up driving 3...

    64 GMC I1000

Since there seems to be some interest in this old truck I guess I'll start by telling you all about how I accidentally bought it. About this time last year I decided I should buy a car that gets better gas mileage than my 99 suburban. A V6 Mustang should do. So I started looking on Facebook...

Got back from the parts run road trip. I'm gonna be stylin' soon as spring hits. The chrome came from Amazon. The rest I got today for a screamin' deal. The headers are coated. Everything should clean up purty.

I can sure do that. Might be a little while. There's a bunch of stuff I've already fixed since I brought her home last April. I suppose I could make this a build along if there's interest.

Oh yeah. Definitely gotta get dual pipes. Love that sound. Been listening on YouTube. The intake, carb and headers with new dual exhaust will probably be as far as I get this year. And make the HEI work. In the meantime I can try to round up a cam I like and try to find a head off a 194 to...

    64 GMC I1000

This just came in the mail. I got some studying to do. Thanks for the links. I'm not thinking turbo. Just maybe head work. Maybe a 194 head. And a good street cam.

    64 GMC I1000

Do you know what the compression would be with the 194 head and stock pistons? I was actually wondering about that the other day. I'm not even sure what the stock compression ratio is at this point. Like I said, I'm new at 6cyl. Got a specific Isky cam recommendation? Torque trumps hp but both...

As soon as the weather cooperates with my schedule I'll try dropping that HEI back in again with a unresisted wire and see if I can make it work. I guess I should mention it's an ebay chinesium one... I looked at the Webers but they are pricy. The 600 Holley is planned to go on my square but I...

    64 GMC I1000

Thanks. Well, I'm not sure if 390 is what Clifford recommends. I'm buying the stuff used. Kinda sounds about right tho. But I like to get others input. The 64 doesn't have a resistor. It has a resistor wire. I actually installed the HEI before and had it hooked up to that wire but couldn't get...

    64 GMC I1000

I have a 64 GMC with the 230 straight 6. 420 4spd. 3:54 rear. Got a couple of questions. First, I want to upgrade to HEI. The original wire to the coil is a resistor wire. Do I need to run a new, non-resistor hot wire? I have a deal worked out for a Clifford intake and headers. Supposed to...

    86 K20 parts

I'd just be guessing on the condition. All I wanted was the engine. Body and frame were rusted gone. It drove on and off the trailer and in and out of my driveway... I'm pretty cheap. Make an offer and come get em.

Sorry but it was a non a/c truck.

    Straight 6 HEI

Thanks but the distributor is mainly what I need. I probably don't even really need the coil... just figgered it would be good to get a tried and true matched set.

    Straight 6 HEI

I'm looking for a good used HEI distributor complete with coil for a 70's inline 6 250cid. In Central Illinois or willing to pay for shipping if it's not crazy.
