    Stripped bellhousing to transmission threads

The other guy in white says I should fix it like a pro and upgrade to a bellhousing that can take a lot of abuse, if such a thing exists. He also says, maybe its time for a more modern truck.

    Stripped bellhousing to transmission threads

True, it is taking heavy loads and is a dump bed. The bellhousing is aluminum. It wouldn't be possible to do any decent surface prep in there for an adhesive approach because its a greasy mess.

    Stripped bellhousing to transmission threads

Ok, had another idea. Let's have some fun with this for the sake of discussion and creativity. What might work that would hold tight but I wouldn't have to take out the transmission and bell? Knowing that these ideas would wreck the bellhousing holes. 1. Use one of those expanding anchor...

    Stripped bellhousing to transmission threads

Smart advice all. I'll put it on the list to repair properly. This is a truck that drives maybe 1,000 miles per year but I don't want to wreck other important stuff. I just envision that surgery like this will lead me to all sorts of other discoveries while I'm in there that it won't just be...

    Stripped bellhousing to transmission threads

Thanks everybody. Sounds like these bolts are important and that they need to be snug. Looks like a lot of bellhousings for sale on Ebay, so even if the bolts get stuck with red thread lock, maybe worth it as a work around. Taking these parts out to fix it right, seems like a lot of effort for...

    Stripped bellhousing to transmission threads

Noticed today that one of the bolts between my manual transmission and the bellhousing was very loose, basically the bolt was out. I believe I have an SM465. The bolt will go in, and sort of grab, but it doesn't snug tight. Seems like threads are stripped or compromised. Checked the other...

    PCV routing check

No, the VECI sticker is not on the air cleaner, but is on the body. Not sure what the part is called, but it's the body part that serves as the upper radiator support/cross member if that makes sense.

    1970 C50 2 Ton advice

Well, maybe it's easier to just share a photo of it. I see 6 lugs in the front. Truck looks like its in nice shape from the pictures. Side dump "beet box" setup. Price is high though, seller is asking $16k.

    1970 C50 2 Ton advice

Thanks BennyT - This wouldn't be a bare shell, but a fully functioning, road worthy truck. They are asking a lot of $$ for it, so not sure I can swing it. I wondered how the drum brakes would do in Colorado mountains where I would be doing a lot of heavy braking for 20-40 minutes of driving...

    PCV routing check

Good point on the air cleaner assembly. I have the TBI with a single stud-type air cleaner. But that is just what it came with when I bought it and who knows if somebody before me changed it to something else.

    1970 C50 2 Ton advice

Thinking about one of these that is for sale on Craigslist. Anybody have any experience trying to get parts for these? Is it easy? The truck has front drum brakes. Can these be converted to discs or is that a major project/headache? If I buy it, I would be using it for hauling material in...

    PCV routing check

Hey all, thanks for the posts. Sorry I disappeared for a while. So here is what I ended up doing. Keep in mind this was a "farm truck" before I bought it, so all sorts of strange half-baked repairs have been done. I now have the PCV valve in the passenger side valve cover and I made up a...

    PCV routing check

Yeah, I meant one of those PCV breathers that just attach directly to the valve cover rather than routing a hose to the air filter area. I live in a place where I need to keep things stock for emissions reasons, so not sure if the plug in breather filters would pass.

    PCV routing check

Yes, the passenger side with the PCV valve is to the rear and the driver side is toward the front. I use the driver side as my oil fill cap since my covers are both passenger side covers. Air cleaner is round with a single stud for the cover, looks like the carb one. I've seen some TBI trucks...

    PCV routing check

Thanks Octane. As it is now, there is an open connection between the Driver side valve cover and the inboard side of the air filter plus there is no breather filter element on this hose connection. The connection is on the underside of the air filter housing where that small 90-degree bent...

    PCV routing check

They are on opposite sides of engine and only one PCV valve. Passenger side cover has the PCV valve connected to the TBI per the emissions sticker routing. Driver side is more of a guess. Driver side is currently an open/free flow hose between the valve cover grommet and the small metal...

    PCV routing check

Wanted to get some advice/verification on my PCV routing/hoses for an 89 454 TBI 3500. The odd part is I have two passenger side valve covers on the engine (past owner did this), so I have two valve covers with only a single PCV grommet in each. Presently I have the PCV valve on the...

    Broken lower kingpin grease fittings

Thanks bucket and Craig. It is likely that these have been broken for years, so hopefully some fresh grease in there will be enough.

    Broken lower kingpin grease fittings

Looking for any suggestions from the wise folks on this forum. Both lower kingpin grease fittings on a Dana 60 front axle are sheared off. I don't know how long they have been like this. Things don't get too rusty in Colorado, so I think I should be able to back out the broken fittings...

    Towing capacity/GCWR?

Great points. It's a flatbed equipment trailer. Typical use would be about an 80 mile round trip, loaded one way, empty the other, about 50/50 hilly and flat terrain. Usually 45-50 mph max speed and more like 30-40 max speed loaded in the hills. I don't rush. I think of the truck almost...

    Towing capacity/GCWR?

Thanks Blue Ox. Very helpful. So it looks like a DRW chassis cab 7.4 motor has a gross trailer weight of 10k with 4.10 axle ratio and 12k with 4.56 ratio. Seems like either axle ratio means a 10k rated trailer would be a decent match for my truck. Thanks for the help.

    Towing capacity/GCWR?

Good question and I don't know the ratio. But I can say that the engine revs quite high in top gear if I go much over 55. Just by ear since it has no tach. 45-55 mph max seems like the happy zone for the engine.

    Towing capacity/GCWR?

Anybody out there have ideas on what the combined truck/trailer/load weight rating is for my truck? Or if I can figure it out from the VIN or the codes in the glove box? I might get a used 10k rated trailer and wondering if this is too much for my truck or a good match. Its a 1989 V3500...

    Rear bleeder access trouble

Thanks to everybody who helped me on this. So, I got everything back together, went on a long test drive and the brakes work very well with firm pedal and much less pedal travel than before. But the rear bleeding process was strange and it still doesn't seem right, but I got it as best I...

    Rear bleeder access trouble

Good to know. So if I ever part out this truck, people might not want to buy this rear axle?
