Cam selection for a 70's Malibu

I agree, finding out why bent pushrod, and why others don't go up and down is important. He thinks it may be because previous owner installed too high a lift cam in the engine, and wore out the lobes.. I don't know. He doesn't want to do a rebuild, doesn't even want to pull the intake manifold...

Cam selection for a 70's Malibu

Hey guys, feel free to jump all over me iff needed, but I have a cam question. A friend of mine asked me for help picking a cam for his son's 70 something malibu. It's got a stock 350 (as far as he knows) with vortec heads, with aftermarket intake and I think holley carb? Anyhow, he...

Disabled 4 cylinders on a TBI motor :) MPG Gain???

NOt another square getting a torn all up? Jeeze, what part of they arne't making any more of these can't people understand??? Anyhow, back to the mpg thing, I am confident your 4 cylinder thing would have gotten you probably the same result if you'd gotten all 8 running healthy as they...

Disabled 4 cylinders on a TBI motor :) MPG Gain???

Well, 4.3 then, lets not make things more comlicated than needed. As for it not having enough power, didn't some of these trucks come with a straight six 250CI engine in them from the factory?

Disabled 4 cylinders on a TBI motor :) MPG Gain???

Hmm, makes a guy wonder just how well a 3400 V6 would do in one of these trucks, might get pretty good MPG, and not take as much of a performance hit as cutting out 4 cylinders.. Add a Turbo, and as long as you keep your foot out of it, you'd maybe have MORe power, and better MPG!

    Cab mount work..

Awesome, this is exactly the info I was looking for!! Thank you, Some dumb reason, it never occured to me to look for the spot welds from the top, insid the cab, I was laying under there looking at rusted up metal trying to figure out how to find the spot welds.. Brain fart! Thanks...

    Cab mount work..

To be more specific, how many spot welds are there holding those on?

    Cab mount work..

Any of y'all who've been following my poor truck might remmember that I have rusted out floor, and cab mounts. We just got 2 feet of snow last week, but looks like the ground is finally not too muddy to lay on so I am thinking about getting under her again, and seeing if I can fix her up to...

    camel back heads?

For example, as annoying as I find them personally, I even understand the silly fart can mufflers on the Hondas and Toyotas I see running around. They don't perform any better, but to the kid driving the thing, it's the closest thing he can get to feeling like he's got a sports car. For...

    camel back heads?

Well, Harley wouldn't have gone to all the trouble to try to patent the "sound" and sue Honda when they came out with a single crankpin Vtwin, and Polaris came out with their bike that had that distinctive potato potato potato sound. Very well documented large reason for people liking the...

    camel back heads?

Well, the lopey idle sounds cool, ask any Harley rider why they chose Harley, it isn't because of the reliability, or the smooth ride, or even the crazy drag racing times.. That said, my whole point of this was how to do it without having adverse effect on drivability, ruining engine would not...

    camel back heads?

Suppose I could just turn the idle speed way down to where it's barely running..

    camel back heads?

I mean, I know duration is duration, that came out wrong, I am thinking about the power band, that you could set up a power band on your cam (maybe with the roller cams and stuff where we are seeing much more abrupt slopes?) that comes on early that has lots of duration, that would idle rough...

    camel back heads?

I understand the duration stuff, and how you can putz with higher cranking compression to counter it, etc.. I just saw the ad on the thumper cams where they said they had the distinctive lopey idle of hight duration idle without sacrificing drivablilty. I was trying to figure out how this could...

    couple trucks and other stuff

Seriously, I will be heading to Michigan in the end of May, if you still have that truck, (78 with 350/4 speed) I'd be very interested in towing it back.. For future reference to ANYONE, my ideal truck is a 73-79 (round headlights) with a 350/4 speed (prefer the one with the regular 4, not...

    couple trucks and other stuff

That 78 is pretty much exactly the truck I am looking for.. If it was 1/2 ton, I'd be all over it.. Sounds like you scrapped it??? NOOOOO!! Even if you part that thing out, cab, frame, and title has GOT to be worth more than the CHinese are giving yoU!!!

Dual Thrush or Dual Cherry Bombs?

Longer they are, the less snaple crackle you get, also the closer you place them to your manifold/header the more the snapp crackle pop will be pronounced. You place the packs further back, you will have more rumble, less crackle.

    92 K case 700R4 tear down

Wow, on that cylinder, talk about paint bucket pistons! Paper clip might go pretty well too, be a bit stiffer than my welding wire. I liked how it flexed, but didn't break.

Show me 36" tires on a 4" lift

I've always wondered about this, on some trucks, it seems that 6" isn't enough to clear 33" tires, and on others, you can get away with 35's without any lift at all! I had a half ton truck, that fit 33's with no lift, and then I bought some 36" Buckshot mudders, stuck them on, and it drove...

    92 K case 700R4 tear down

I made my own wire tool for the lip seal out of wire feed welding wire.. Got some old scrap metal brake lines, and looped the wire in it, and smashed the tubing down on it. Works slick!

    92 K case 700R4 tear down

Drum pretty scorched there. 2-4 band is ouch.. I think valve body is having a problem. There was a guy on Ebay that was selling rebuilt valve bodies with all the fixes done for $85 with exchange a while back, rather than trying to buy the reamers and all that, you might wanna look into that...

    camel back heads?

The question I always wanted to know, was how to get the lopey idle, and still maintain low end grunt/drivability.. :D What's the deal with the "thumper" cams that claim they do this? I actually thought about having a valve on the vacuum brake booster that one could open at will to make their...

Can "carburetor" and "throttle response" be in the same sentence?

Is the transmission kick down adjusted properly? I am assuimng automatic, not manual tranny. That would get rather boggy, if it's not down shifting as it should.

    454 or 383

'Bout all a big block does good in my opinion is DRINK the gas.. I've never been impressed, for the weight, and fuel consumption with the power they supply. I mean, sure, if you wanna blown mud dragster you will never drive on the street with NOS, yeah, go with the stroked 454, but if you...
