    Fuel or ignition issue

Well, you have done everything else. Base timing is supposed to be 4 to 6 degrees with th dist unplugged. i say the cat is the next thing. If you have a vacuum gauge, hook it up and see what it reads...if not, cut it off and clamp in a piece of pipe, or take it to an exhaust shop and see what...

Ok...there is the answer to the mystery. Pin D goes to C7 on the ecm, looks like they wer using high gear signals to control egr. Pin A will go directly to the brake switch. Pin B...heres the deal. the diagram shows the ground sid of the TCC solenoid grounding in the trans. you would have...

Fuel pump questions, what route works best?

Yes, the sender demensions should be the same, the only difference between the 86 and 87 tanks, is that the 87 has baffles in it to keep fuel around the pump pickup during accell, stop and cornering. I used my 86 tank with no problems, but it will let you know when the fuel is too low. If you...

Tow Trucks, Wreckers and Car Hauler Discussion

Need proximity alarms with those remote lights....lotsa guys leave them behind. I always had a set of my own lights, with extension line,L.E.D heads, and large, round rubber bottomed magnets. Always took them with me at the end of my shift...pissed off the next guy getting in the truck, because...

    Gutless Wonder

yeah, Lot of folks get drawn in by the HP figures, then think "WTF" when they get left at the line by a plain jane goodwrench stock replacement or TBI truck. 4 choices these days for Trucks, GM stock replacement, some call it the "target engine", 87-95 Truck engine, there are 2 versions to...

Ahh, ok, i am going through too many threads at once here, getting confused. Is Pop's truck the one with the 290 hp 350? I have always considered that more of a car engine, cammed for higher rpm performance. Cam duration is 222/222 most trucks are Around 190/195 higher cam duration, moves the...

Sounds like a tired bottom end. Was there ever a compression check done after the new heads went on?

    Head gasket/cracked heads?

They are smogger heads that were used on all of the 350's up to 86, but the ones from the crate/replacement engines wer treated to the larger 1.95 intake and 1.6 exhaust valves. Decent heads If your truck is just a truck, and not a hotrod.

Sounds like that truck my benifit from th next step higher gear ratio...less stress on the engine means better all around performance...especially in that area.

    87 tbi hard turning over

If it is an extended start, the fuel pump relay is probably toast. Look on the relay plug on the firewall, and if you see a red wire with an end on it, thats a direct line to the pump. run a wire fromthe battery, to that wire, then see if it fires up like it should. The relay is onlythere for...

you mean with a " T" at the filter, or just capped directly into the gauge? If direct, that pump should be at 18psi or over. paw Paw may have another map too

Back-up lights staying on in drive

Down at the bottom of the steering column, is a half moon shaped switch, perched on top of the steering tube. Thats the reverse light/ neutral safety switch. chck that out. you can even take it apart and clean it. sometimes granulated metal wear causes tracing, and completes the circuite, aven...

H1s are no joke either, but you would have to service a really wealthy area to ever see one.

    Improving ride on a 4x4

I think the only option is to get rid of the leafs, and go with a trailing link/coil spring setup on the front. other tna that, it is what it is.

Another issue for the Edelbrock... The only carbed tow trucks I have any experience with had QJets or Holleys, and one was a Dodge with a thermoQuad. The Dodge was the only problem truck.

    6.2 conversion

yup, the power numbers are low, as with any Light Diesel from that era, but it is a workhorse. The other thing that I would suggest is to run synthetic oil, keep everything sludge free.

I think the flywheel will be different...its a Detroit engine. 3" single is ok, I think they came with 2 1/4 duals.
