My teenager's first small block build

The block is likely from a Chevrolet 4X4. Before you send in for a hot tank and magnaflux, take a quick look at the bottom of the cylinder bores for signs of leaking. It is rare to see issues there, yet if there is such, then you don't need to spend extra money. As for anyone else purchasing...

    Headlight, driving lights.

I will start off with a Caveat Emptor for everyone. Until recently I performed and was licensed for Government Safety Inspections on everything except Motorcycles, Boats and Aircraft. Several years ago, I was sent a Safety Bulletin regarding headlamps and false "DOT" designations. Not only...

My teenager's first small block build

I admire every family where the kids are as engaged in activities with the parents as the parents are with them. These are memories to treasure forever. Myself, for a first build I would recommend a 350 and not a 383. The 383 build does have details such as checking for clearance around the...

    Mechanical fuel pump beef/info rant

Bean counters are masters at manipulating numbers to suit their will, and prone to lengthy bouts of questionable intellectual capacity. I had one inform me mechanics were considered an expense and the company could third-party all the work. Lucky for me, one of the owners overheard the...

    Mechanical fuel pump beef/info rant

As for the fuel pump, I spent a few extra bucks and purchased a fuel pressure regulator with a third bypass line. I have my fuel pressure gauge right where the two lines separate to the front and rear fuel bowls (I am using a Holley 680) and the bypass line from the regulator goes to my bypass...

    Flatspotting tires

Number one: Are you driving the truck regularly? Tires will have mild flat spots after sitting for a few weeks or more. Number two: What is the quality level of the tires? Higher-end tires will be less prone to flat-spotting than say an "economy" tire; with even some of the lesser tires...

    Can't get shit for supplies!

I am old enough to remember when Kokanee beer was only available in the Kootenays. Then it went through several owners and the taste changed significantly.

    Can't get shit for supplies!

As for the government in Saskatchewan, they have implemented COVID Passports for pretty much everything - either vaxed or proof of negative test...... however getting tested is almost impossible if you aren't vaxed (interesting huh?) They are also actively hiring COVID Enforcement Police and...

What defined the shape of a SM465 shifter? The rod part

5'9" 150# wow if only. One of the reasons I built a square body is because I can fit in it (sort of.) I'm giddy like a school girl when I find gloves for sale I can get my hands in.

    81 C10 383 stroker stinks

Spend a couple bucks and get a basic O2 sensor kit and verify it absolutely. You don't need to keep the gauge in the truck, just use it to get dialed in - you can always thread a plug into the exhaust **** later. I suggest you start from scratch and verify the basics, starting with a good air...

    Double Hump thoughts:

I agree with everyone on getting new heads. Things can get pretty expensive in a hurry when rebuilding old, old heads. Remember, you are only one crack away from throwing out the entire project. Besides, the new heads will have the proper accessory mounting holes. Leave those humpers for...

    I need help GM family

I would follow Bextreme with the vacuum leaks. Vacuum lines will turn to spaghetti after ten years, let alone thirty. Check the vacuum distributor on the thermostat housing, those are notorious for cracks. Use WD40 when checking or a small propane torch (as you would use for brazing water pipes)...

87 350 tbi runs fine until i stop

Before you go crazy, idle the engine and use a small propane bottle around the base of the TBI and along the edges of the intake gaskets. If the engine suddenly smooths out, you have an air leak. Cheap checks first. Parts second.

    Too Low

Without getting too long-winded: 1. Is there interference between the wheel and the lower control arm when you turn? 2. Have the springs been cut or are they the short ones from a kit? Or are they stock? If you have interference, you may wish to consider larger diameter wheels and move up to...

    Mean sounding cams worth it?

I will throw my support behind Rusty Nail, with some additions. Whatever money you earn, split it in half and don't spend the one half - you never know when you will need it in an emergency - there may be a day when you are out driving around and (Lord forbid) something happens where you will...

    Rear sway bar

The half-ton 2wd Suburbans had a rear sway bar offered from factory and it was listed in the original parts books. Mind you, in all the time I was at the dealer, I never heard of anyone asking for one and never seen one on anything that came through. There might be one out there....... somewhere.

Tell me what this is and prove it.

I am not able to locate one around here, look for the Emissions Decal on either the upper Radiator Cover or on the Air Filter Cover. Almost everything you need to know about the hose connections for that particular vehicle will be printed on it.

Switched Power for Electric Fan Relay

I would go with Doppleganger on this. Whatever you do, make certain you have a fuse as close to your power source as possible. You do NOT want six feet of fusible link to melt.

Can you make a 305 stroker with 350 crank and rods?

I am with Benny on this. I will add if you are planning on spending money, start with a 350 and not a 305. The 350 will normally handle an overbore of up to .060 and still be sound, while a 305 punched out will still not equal a 350.

1976 vin number. How many digits is your vin?

I spent some years at a GM dealer and on occasion had to verify VINs. The frame will have stamping of the VIN, and may or may not be complete, it WILL have the Sequence (last six numbers) stamped. The VIN plate will be on the Driver's-side on either the door jamb or the front corner of the dash...

    Drive shaft grew?

Hi Scott, By the looks of it, you haven't had a reply yet and also perhaps have already figured it out. When you lowered the rear suspension you effectively moved the rear diff closer to the transmission. Think a right-angle triangle where the long side was the original length the...

    Eastwood internal frame coating review

If I went to a body shop and they refused to paint my truck if I wouldn't let them spray their goo all over the inside first, then I would go to another body shop. My two cents.
