    The purpose of drilling the hole at the end of a crack prior to welding is to relieve unforeseen stress on the metal by the crack. By relieving it you make it less likely to crack there again as frankenchevy stated.

    Spark knock will sound like pinging in the motor when its under load. Try finding yourself a hill and loading the engine up at the lowest rpm possible, Ive found this is the easiest way to hear the pinging.

    To capture the full strength of a bolt/stud it needs to engage 100% of the diameter of bolt/stud. I.e. 9/16 stud needs to have 9/16 of thread engagement in order to hold it securely & at full strength.

    Did you connect them to the first plugs closest to the bulkhead? You should be able to abandon the wires after the headlight plug(s) on the drivers side.
