    383 vortec high compression

Because you will destroy your quench. Lets say you are 9.5 to 1 compression at .060 quench with a cam that has a early intake valve closing point, so you are building fairly high cylinder pressure. A .060 quench may not like pump gas, (detonation), but that same engine with the same cam at .040...

    Camshaft flexibility for 1978 350

Not the way to go imo. Just pick up a summit 1748 cam and lifters and your 350 will be happy. that set is about 130.00, (the price of a fun night out), then when you do your 383 you can pick out a better cam that works with your compression ratio, head flow, etc..... If it was me I would just...

402 Experts... Tell me what you know

I will throw in my 2 cents, This is all 454 not 402 but my engine guy, (that built engine's for the outlaw circuit back in the day) was a big block guru, (30 years ago). Anyway I fixed up a 1979 1/2 ton stepside, 4x4 from the ground up. New paint and interior 4 inch lift with 35 inch tire's...

    Headers and Exhaust

No, 650 for labor and aluminized 2 1/2" pipe. I will look for the part # for my header's , I did not have to ding or modify anything, they fit great. Another great header that I have on my big block square is the doug thorley tri y,s, bad ass header's as well. Also check out the exhaust shop's...

    Headers and Exhaust

I dont know about kits, (dont use them) but I have hedman elite heavy duty , thermal coated, headers and they are sweet, (14 gauge tube's, 3/8 inch flange) and fit great. I always go to my favorite exhaust shop and get a nice custom job. Anyway I have 2 1/2 inch pipe, borla muffler's, and I had...

    383 vortec high compression

I would not run that set up. 400 crank has a 3.75 stroke , divided by 2 = 1.875 5,7 inch rod your piston you picked , 1.433 compression height That equals 9.008 and a stock 350 deck is 9.020, that equals piston down .012 That equals .050 quench on your chart of parts, which is not great for...

    383 vortec high compression

That would not be good at all, .025 + .090 = .115 quench.

    383 vortec high compression

Quench is what you are after, what pistons say on the box for compression means nothing. If you bolt vortecs on a stock small block with stock heads, (as long as the stock heads are 72cc) they will bring compression up and flow better and have a way better combustion chamber than old stocker...

New (to me) carb, way way too rich

That thin plate is to support the metering plate across the power valve cavity in the main body , so with out it you could have an internal leak on the secondary side. Some main bodies dont have that cavity and then you dont need that thin plate.

    Running lean on light throttle

Something to add, I just put a gm sp 350/357 crate motor in my k5 blazer and I have been working with two carbs, (quick fuel off road 600) and a, (holley street warrior 600) trying to dial them in and learning a lot as I go along. Anyway back to timing. My cam is a hyd. roller, 215* at .050...

    Calling the Holley carb experts

That is a great way to introduce more air at idle. The other thing guys do if you are still rich at idle is use a thin strand of wire in the idle feed restrictor in the metering block bent at a 90 degree's and the gasket will hold it in place.. I dont want to be the guy with bad news but I...

    Holley 3310-2

Holley # 34-13 kit for dual feed, You will need a longer transfer tube for side hung floats, (allstate carbs.). You will need jets as well.

    Flowmaster FlowFX Installs

I just put a new engine in my blazer, (gm. sp350/357 crate engine). I am still tuning on it but I have about 600 miles on it as we speak. My exhaust is heddman headers , 2 1/2 inch pipe , moroso spiral flow chambered mufflers , dumped just over the back axle with 3 inch tips. Its sounds super...

    H - Pipes

Just put new exhaust on my blazer, 1, have headers , 2 1/2 inch pipe, moroso spiral flows, no h pipe , just over the back axle , 3 inch x 18 inch long tips. Sounds like a drag car from idle to any rpm you choose to be at. So that was getting a bit old on the highway and attracted to much...

    '73 K20 bucking bronco

I have a lifted 77 crew cab that I tow quite a bit with and I went with 56" custom, soft , deaver lift springs for the rear , no over loads. Then I put an air bag kit on for towing. I also went with rancho 9000 shocks set on 1 for unloaded use and turned them up for carrying a load as well as...

pinion angle shims on the front?

I would just get new center pins , run them through your shims and spring pack and you are good to go, 4* shims are not that much imo.

    Vortec 350 Timing Table

Thanks for the link , a lot of reading , have to get started on that. I am working on a vortec 350 in my blazer , (that I just dropped in) as we speak. I am playing with ignition curves and vacuum advance cans right now to get her where I want her and then to the holley off road carb. My...

    Vortec 350 Timing Table

I know nothing about computer controlled anything , but for all my old hot rod engine's timing , initial , curve , cruise , and all in depend's on cam and heads. There are more factor's that come into play , elevation , air temp , etc... but we wont go into that stuff. Anyway , for a stock set...

    Cali Smog Engine Rebuild

I built a mild big block for a federal cab. stepside that I had a while back and it passed smog , no problem. My machinist , (who was the shit) told me you have to stay 268ish or under for cam selection. My set up was .030 over 454, early model 396 closed chamber heads, 268 comp cam, 9 to 1...

    Mild 350 build. Opinions? Anybody?

My earlier post I was talking about my girls truck with 59,000 mile's on it with a retrofit roller set up in her square , so I stopped by my buddies house yesterday to ask him how many miles he had on his square and what retrofit roller set up he had, (his square rip's as well) and he said his...

    Mild 350 build. Opinions? Anybody?

I have no problems with flat tappet cams at all if you are on a budget , (they have worked great for years) , but I really like all of the mild hydraulic roller cam builds I have been around , (two of my own and several others) with no problems. So if you want to save money by all means run a...

    Mild 350 build. Opinions? Anybody?

I put together a 350 for a buddies k5 and it was great on fuel and excellent torque combo. That being said it's all about good machine work, (which is hard to find) and the right parts. I always go for quench motor builds myself on the bottom end and then go with the best heads you can afford...

454 with 10 bolt rear end?

Back in the day , I sunk a bunch of money into my 12 bolt , super brute limited , Richmond gear's , alloy axle's , etc. With a 425 horse small block , auto tran's and 35x14.50 ground hawg's I used to spray that 12 bolts gut's out on a regular basis , (three times to be exact), I was hard on it...
