Don't know. However the Tech 1 does have more capability/data than the snap on red brick on GM vehicles. Biggest problem with either of those is the condition of the leads.- fast 99

Did this K20 come factory with catalytic converter?
When we had emissions checks in our area EPA supplied a small booklet that listed all required original equipment. Something similar should have been provided to inspectors in other states.- fast 99

GM Heritage shows no cats on all engines above 8600 GVW for 86 on page 39 both California and US. Couldn't link/paste the page. Agree with above, tranny can't be too cool when towing. Although might be excessive I have 2 coolers in series after the radiator cooler with a temp gauge. For 1980 through 1986, the same models as those for '79 used cats. However, a new C6P heavy duty option was offered for C/K 20/25 models which provided an 8,600 lb suspension package. Friction material varies between manufacturers. If a temp gun is available it might help narrow down where the problem is. Sounds like there may be more than 1 issue. Earlier small blocks use a flange on the header pipe, no gasket. Not a great design. Engine movement and frame twist would sometimes loosen the joint. There is also the style with a flat manifold surface, gasket, heat riser, header pipe with flange. I don't believe style pictured will work with...- fast 99

If you suspect exhaust leak, get a stethoscope. They are very inexpensive at HF. Bad fuel pumps or worn push rods can sometimes sound like a loose lifter. When covers are off watch for similar rocker movement between cylinders. Worn valve train is another possibility. If equipped, are you...- fast 99

Convertors were on lighter duty trucks. Probably the same head but lead would kill cats. In the past I have seen several early heads with extreme valve recession. 73 Blazer 350 spark plug stuck
If the porcelain can be blown out as suggested I would try to drill and tap whats left provided there is access. Use grease on the bit and tap to reduce metal entering the cylinder. Another possibility is a bolt extractor socket for removing rounded nuts. Doubt it will work but worth a try.- fast 99
