Wheel almost fell off while driving…help
Unless overloaded or abused properly torqued lug nuts do not fall off. That said, GM used hub centric wheels from the factory. Many aftermarket wheels are designed to fit other brands with larger centers. Thus, they are not hub centric on GM. Just something to think about.- fast 99

Doubtful, spring filter then nut. Why do you ask? Previous posts contain correct instructions. Was the float replaced? Fiber floats get heavy with age. Should never be reused. That's news to me didn't know that was copied. I don't like much of the new or reproduction parts out there. If you can rebuild/repair OEM stuff your better off. Just today bought an emergency brake cable from a national parts chain. Spent the next 1/2 hour trying to get it to fit. Seems none...- fast 99

Biggest jobs you have completed in the shortest amount of time.
One of our tow trucks broke a crank in the parking lot when I started it up in the morning. Was a 73 K20 350 4 spd only had PS. Needed to do a jump start about 6 blocks away. Idled the truck down and back to take care of that call. Then yanked the motor out rolled it over on another pickup... -
Idle Mixture Screws Do Not Adjust Anything on 1974 454.
Can try dribbling fuel in each side of primary venturis when running. If engine slows down rich, speeds up or smooths out lean. That can also tell you if it's isolated to one side or both.- fast 99

AC switches are listed under switches not AC on Rock auto. If it's an original 76 system believe they had thermal limiters and bulbs.- fast 99

Really weird air conditioning problem
Can you get a gauge set for both high and low side pressures? 100 psi assume low side? If that's the case something is restricting flow. Likely orifice tube. Not a good idea to clean it. Interesting, do you suppose part of that could be from numerous electrons passing to and from nearly every part of later vehicles that have OEM installed aluminum rads? Just a thought. Haven't seen to many rotted out cores. More often tanks either denature from excessive heat [low coolant] or...- fast 99

Other than an originality standpoint why do you dislike aluminum rads? From what I have seen they transfer heat much better. There used to be around 10 radiator shops in this area. Now were down to 1. Getting radiators fixed and sourcing cores isn't cheap or fast. OP, appears it may be...- fast 99

Yes, [alternate option] if lean a thin piece wire under the rod holder to raise the rods. Be sure the secondary spring is wound up the correct amount. Probably in the area or 3/4 - 7/8 turn on adjuster. Should be on the spec sheet that came in the kit.- fast 99

If the carb is an 83 there is a small plug on top that will allow access to metering rod adjustment screw. I usually take those out when rebuilding then reinstall after carb is set up. If carb is together using a small [1/8th inch] drill into it far enough to get a sheet metal screw started them...- fast 99

Working AC again
Later 134 vehicles have insulation over the drier too. Got it from the local P&P seemed to help when at lower RPM's sitting in traffic. -
Decided on a 350 engine, still deciding on stroking it out or not.
Need to figure what is usable then decide depending on funds and skill level. If you want to stick with a carb putting a leg in it isn't a bad idea. Stroker kits are available. Heads may be modified to an extent they may be undesirable for street use. May need all new valves, springs, and...- fast 99

Rough Idle and Stalling
When throttle is closed vacuum should increase not decrease. Know you preformed dynamic compression but how accurate was it? Have you checked for an intake gasket leaking underneath? Try dribbling fuel in each primary side of the carb when running any change?- fast 99

Yeah that's what we figured out. Those Alcoa wheels had a larger center that fit other brands. Should have realized what was going on after the first fail. In addition the inside wheels were stock steel. Aluminum wheels flex more increasing the side load.- fast 99

My thoughts on spare alternators
Kind of do that. Some SB came from the factory with 2 batteries, parts are available. I installed a second one in both trucks. Second one is not isolated. Was handy at the lake when my brother's boat had a dead battery. Took one of mine out. Most new cars today do not have any extra room...- fast 99

That may not be true. Had a customer with a concrete cutting business [heavy for a 1 ton]. He liked shinny stuff and installed Alcoa wheels. Then the trucks started shearing off rear studs. Wouldn't dwell on the timing. You need to do some diagnostics to verify or eliminate. 1STLS1 brought something up related to the cam. What is the vacuum at idle and is it steady? Timing would be safe at 6 degrees, but it is really a mute subject right now. Without vacuum advance and not...- fast 99

Need to fix or check base items before proceeding. Carb cleaner into carb should have some effect, raise RPM if lean, lower if rich. PCV works on vacuum. Have seen issues if incorrect one is installed, or flow is too high. If in doubt replace it they are cheap. Need to fix that advance. When...- fast 99

4 Headlight front end Recommendation
One thing to watch out for is wattage requirement and how they compare to OEM bulbs. Higher wattage may require relay, The OEM circuit breaker in the switch could overload. Know you said vacuum leaks were checked but try disconnecting anything that uses vacuum except advance assume you checked that, brake booster all of it. Check fuel pressure and volume. Was intake and carb base checked for leaks? Although don't think timing is related to idle issues 12 degrees...- fast 99
