My '87 R30 sits for weeks at a time without being driven. After that long in the dusty southwest when I turn on the ac or just the fan I get blasted with dust and pollen. Aside from covering up the fresh air intake grills outside with some magnetic sign fabric I was contemplating somehow...
Thanks Andy, I was concerned about the 115 ft.lbs. on the axle flange bolts.
Good thing I've never broken a bolt from over torquing lol!!
I'm so freakin' AR I even got out my Dremel with a wire wheel to clean both sides of the flange mounting surfaces. God I love my truck.
Thanks for the input guys, I've got the bearings installed, drums rebuilt with new hardware, ready to rock and roll. Once again a 1988 Chevy R30 1 ton dually crew cab with 10.5 dif.
Yes, I've searched the technical archives but must have missed it:
I'm going absolutely nucking futs though...
Well noted guys and thanks! NO GREASE. The exact same lube I just replaced in the dif will be used on the bearings with a quick dunk. It's usually NEVER ever a good idea to mix different kinds of lubricants - and I know better than that. WTF was I thinking? (Slamming open palm repeatedly on...
Yup, it's a big chunk of iron! The last time I replaced a leaky brake wheel cylinder (15 years ago?) I looked at it carefully and it was all good. Didn't really take the time to check to see if it was round since all the "scuff marks" from the pads were consistent. Just took a little Emery...
Awesome, that's what I thought and appreciate the reply. I think I'll shmear a little on the inside and outside like you recommended. Now all I gotta' do is "man up" to heft those brake drums back on without tearing the new seals lol! (I think I'm gonna' use a jack....)
Hi guys:
I'm replacing the REAR bearings on my 88' (square body) 1 ton dually R30 crew cab. Just because they've never been replaced at 140K miles - and yeah - I'm using Timkens.
Do I need to repack these with grease (like the fronts) or are they lubed with differential fluid? I have new 8...
Thanks guys, I'll check it out. The billet part is VERY - ummm - precious. Maybe my pack rats will appreciate it's beauty next time they invade my evaporator compartment!
Charlie: I have the EXACT same issue on my 87 R30, air blowing through the vents at all times and increases with speed. All controls are off. While the other posters have been helpful did you ever find the exact source of the problem? Thanks!
That makes a lot of sense. I installed an aftermarket cd player a loooong time ago and most likely used a hot wire directly to that. That would explain the extra lead - and it's hot with the key off - so I think we have a winner! Ding Ding.
Now on to the cruise control.:uhoh2:
N
I need to check that out.... thanks. But if you're correct how do I ship a six pack to you - and would you ever even THINK :happy160:of drinking American beer?
Howdy guys - my first post here but I actually bought my 1988 R30 (1 ton dually crew cab 454) brand spanking new in 1989! :Big Laugh: That means I'm older than DIRT. And YES, it is a square body.
I recently had the *pleasure* of rebuilding the tilt steering column and it worked! Somehow in...
