4l60e and a 307 gear.
My 92 had 308 rear gears and a 700r4 when it was new. They worked very well together. 21mpg on the highway. Oil pan gasket??
Yeah, the one piece gaskets kits are the way to go. I used one on an old 78 302 Ford F100 a few months ago. Very easy to install with the engine in the vehicle. Leak free.- gpmorgan

To me , it's a no brainer. If your engine is not knocking and doesn't smoke like a tar kiln, you can probably get by with very little machine shop work. Oil pan gasket??
The block casting number behind the left(driver) side head will let you know. You can take some silly putty or play doh and press it into the number if you can't see it with a mirror.- gpmorgan

If I were going to get a crate engine, I would get a GM crate only. For the money, and the fact everything is new with 3 yr and 50k mile warranty, it's a hard deal to beat. 84 GMC white smoke raw feul smell
White smoke is usually an indication of coolant getting into the cylinders. I would do a compression test. Look at the spark plugs as you pull them out for moisture. Another wiring problem!! Help!!
If you have a pigtail for trailer lights, thats where I would check first for problems. Make sure all bulbs and fuses are good. Sounds like it might be the combination switch providing everything else checks out.- gpmorgan

wiring questions. bad ground?
Did you check the fuses with a test light or volt meter? It could possibly be the light switch or the combination switch. Does the radio turn off or does the light in it just go off? OOPS! Did't read all of the thread. I notice it has 2 pages instead of 1. I guess it was a newby mistake. Sorry.- gpmorgan

How do I fix this?
Should be an easy removal. Your new headers will eliminate any tubing to the manifolds. Just plug any other hoses, preferably where they hook to the intake. It's been a long time since I had a vehicle with a smog pump and my memory is kind of fuzzy to say the least.- gpmorgan

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea on the heat shield but I've never had a problem with starters. I have a mini starter now but never had a problem with OEM starter either. Since the starter bolts to the block it doesn't matter which tranny is used. I doubt if the heads are angle plug heads...- gpmorgan

Odd steering behvior
The rag joint is on the steering shaft usually right before the steering gear box. It will cause play in the steering wheel. It's like a flexible u-joint in the steer shaft. I would check those ball joints and A-frame bushings. The rag joint may be worn out. As suggested, Look closely at the frame where the steer box bolts on it. I had an experience similar to yours. My intake gasket started leaking a few months after I started driving it. It was leaking at the back of the intake by #8 cyl. Broken backing plates
If the backing plates are rusty, I would seriously consider replacing them. After all this is the brakes we are talking about. -
Do these trucks just vibrate?
You could have a bad tranny or engine mount. Take a pry bar and check for movement of tranny. Pinion angle and tranny output shaft need to be parallel with each other also.- gpmorgan
