Need to fix noisy ring and pinion.

Last summer I paid a shop to rebuild the 12 bolt in my truck. It lasted about 30 miles and the pinoin was floping around like a fish out of water. I took it back to them to do it right. It seems all they did was retighten the pinion nut and call it good. It had gear noise. They pretty much told...

    Wiring--Engine Heat Protection

I bought something called DEI Fire Sleeves from Summit Racing. Very similar to the plug wire sleeves.

    Shift Indicator

The plastic was broken on my truck as well. I removed the remaining plastic then I drilled a hole in the metal dash behind it. I used a piece of 3/8” chrome plated fuel line with a flare on the end. I used a longish sheet metal screw to pass through the tube to mount it to the dash in place of...

Looks like I have to rebuild or replace my 350 in Houston area

Decades ago I needed to put a rebuilt engine in my ‘81 C10. I too had no place to work on it. I rented a mini warehouse and an engine hoist. I was able to work inside and take all the time I needed. It worked out well.

Runs fine at idle but when i loaded it on a trailer it floods bad

Like David said, the float is likely set too high. It could also be the float is stuck, or maybe the fuel pressure is too high.

Interesting, I did use Richmond. The front, which is quiet, is Yukon.

    Gear pattern and noise questions

Thanks for the comments. I have read thoughts both ways regarding the possibility of the noise getting better. Seems like it may be a crap shoot. I am retired so I have nothing but time to take it apart and try again. If it is going to take a new gear set to make it quiet, I will have to think...

    Gear pattern and noise questions

I have finished my Dana 44 in the front and it works very well. It now has a 4.11 gear to match the rear along with a Powertrax worm gear limited slip. I did the same with the rear 12 bolt axle back in July. It has a slight whine on deceleration at anything more than 20 MPH. I am thinking about...

    Comments on gear pattern?

Thanks for all the comments. I added 0.002" to the pinion shims. I have 20 inch lbs preload on the pinoin. The backlash is now 0.009", spec is 0.006" - 0.010" so I am ok there. I checked the runout on the ring gear, it is about 0.001". The manuall says up to 0.006" is ok. Below are a couple of...

    Comments on gear pattern?

By centered on the teeth do you mean heel to toe (end to end) or face to flank (top to bottom). Terms used in the Yukon book that came with the ring and pinion, or master install kit, I don't remember which. I do have a bean type torque wrench as well as clicker torque wrenches. The rotatin...

    Comments on gear pattern?

I didn't think setting the preload would change the depth,, thanks for confirming. I have the housing sitting on a couple of saw horses so torqueing the nut to set preload may be a challange. Anyway, thanks for the advice, I am going to continue working on it.

    Comments on gear pattern?

The one uses shims to set the preload.

    Comments on gear pattern?

I am setting up a new ring and pinion in my '73 K10. This is the Dana 44 in the front. The original gears were 3.08, the new gears are 4.11. I think the pattern looks OK but I could use some comments from people with more experience. The backlash is at 0.010". I still need to set the pinion...

How many gallons can you put in your gas tank?

I have been thinking about doing that myself. I have a mechanical fuel pump so it shouldn’t be an issue. I would still like to know if this is normal or is there a problem. It doesn’t seem as though it would be this way. As far as iI know, the sending units for the 16 and 20 gallon tanks are the...

How many gallons can you put in your gas tank?

My 73 K10 has dual 20 gallon tanks. I believe the truck originally has a single tank as there is not a factory mounted tank selector switch on the dash. It has a DPDT switch in a drilled hole. He switch did not work when I bought the truck but I rewired it. Now it switches properly and the gauge...

    Quiet muffler recommendations

My truck had Flowmaster 40s on it when I bought it. I had a muffler shop replace them with turbo mufflers of some unknown brand. They made a huge difference.

    ISO manual crank doors

David, I have a ‘73 with manual windows and the doors are a mess. To fix them I will have to to a bunch of welding to hold window parts in place. What shape are your extra doors in and how much to you want for them?

NP 205 rear output change from 1310 to 1350

My ‘73 K10 NP 205 has a 1310 yoke on the output and I want to change it to a 1350 yoke for a new driveshaft. Can I change the output yoke buy just removing the nut from the output shaft and swap the yokes then replace the nut and torque to 150 ft lbs? Or do I need to remove the tail housing to...

Wiper switch connector wire colors and functions

I did get the wiper/washer working with parts for an 83 truck. I have a Painless Wiring full harness so I don’t know how much help I can give as the wire color codes are different than stock. The wiper motor mounted in the stock location but the link from the motor to the wiper arm linkage did...
