What have you done to your square lately??

I'm on the final lap now. I pulled the valve covers and gaskets.Wow, were they bad !!! The gasket on the passenger side wasn't even sealing at the bottom above the exhaust manifold. No wonder I was seeing smoke after the engine had been running for a few minutes. I went with cheap chrome covers...

What have you done to your square lately??

Thanks turbo4whl. The three splines I saw damage on were on the coast side towards the heel. Any idea what the most common cause of damage in that location is?

What have you done to your square lately??

I don't know if it is limited slip or not. I know friction modifier can be used on limited slip (my Jeep) and Positrac. If it's neither then there's no harm. It's basically a fluid that makes things "slipperier". I don't go off road, and if road conditions are bad, I take my Jeep.

What have you done to your square lately??

Bucket, I don't know. The only thing to come out were the 3 very small pieces of metal. Nothing else was seen. Next Spring I'll probably dig into it deeper, unless something comes apart.

What have you done to your square lately??

I changed the fluids in the rear diff today. Unfortunately there was metal pieces on the magnet, and a lot of sludge in the bottom of the housing. Upon further inspection I found three splines that were missing pieces. Cleaned everything, installed the new Lubelocker gasket, painted and...

Once I get it back up and running I guess I'll know then. This afternoon I drained the TC and put new fluid in. The old fluid was not discolored so it's been done in the recent past. Next up is draining the diffs, installing Lubelocker gaskets, and refilling them.

What have you done to your square lately??

Youngest daughter is in town and loves to help me work on my trucks. Had her get underneath, drain the oil, and replace oil and filter. We then tackled the manual transmission fluid. Drained it, and while refilling we kept saying "we're putting in a lot more than we took out". Looked up the...

What have you done to your square lately??

Thought I'd post this here. If your rig is having idle issues, and especially back fire on deceleration, then the first thing you should check is your EGR valve. Here's what mine looked like when i pulled it. The blockage was very hard and took a little effort to remove it.

What have you done to your square lately??

The more I work on my truck the more I learn about it. It had white mirrors when I bought it, and after preparing the rims for paint today, I found they were originally white and had been painted black. I painted them black again and also painted the Chevy logos black too.I suspect that the...

    Emissions issue

In preparation for installing new valve covers, gaskets, and EGR valve I pulled the EGR valve today. It's definitely the cause of some of my issues. Here's pics before cleaning and after cleaning. Before cleaning it the diaphragm would move but, because of the carbon build-up, nothing would pass...

I learn something every day, but not today....

Thank you Ayden and Rob. I have the GM part number off the EGR and found a WVE brand on Rockauto that lists that part number as compatible. It was the only one I could find in the search that listed the correct part number. I also find it interesting that it's listed as being for California...

I learn something every day, but not today....

I'm getting all the indications of the EGR valve sticking, so I decided to just order a new one. This is where the fun started. I have an '85 GMC K2500 with a 350. I've been under the impression that it's a VIN L engine according to everything I've researched. When trying to order a new valve I...

What have you done to your square lately??

Got the truck up and running with the completion of the exhaust system installation. It sure sounds better now. The neighbors don't have to keep thinking there's a 21 year old driving around the area anymore. Next up is a new tailgate handle (the paint is drying), and changing all the fluids...
