    GOV rebuilt 4-53 Detroit?

Had a chat with the owner this morning. It's covered in Cosmoline, so it's safe to say it's either new or a Government rebuild. It would be going in my military K30, with an NV 4500 and either a Gear Vendors or a two speed Brownie.

    GOV rebuilt 4-53 Detroit?

Oh I know what rebuilders get for them, it's 9K +, but a professionally rebuilt Detroit will out live me.

    GOV rebuilt 4-53 Detroit?

Gentlemen, found this engine but the owner wasn't sure what it is. It's definitely a 4-53 Detroit. Question is, what is it worth if it is a new or GOV rebuild? Apparently it was found in a warehouse clean out. I know the Detroit diesel isn't a very popular topic here but I figured someone would...

    6.2 diesel hp

I had a Banks turbo on my 86 military K30. Banks claimed +60 hp so the J code 6.2 made 215 hp. It did make a big enough difference to justify putting the money into the turbo kit. Leaving the TH400 in it with the 4.56 will give you the fastest 0 to 55 mph 6.2 but it will be a time bomb. I put a...

    6.2 porous block?

I'm going to weigh my options. This engine is not in the truck. I'm not going to roll the dice on either welding it or patching the cracks.

    6.2 porous block?

Thanks for the heads up. There was JB weld on the cracks which was flaking off. I found the JB weld when I was mocking up a starter bracket.

    6.2 porous block?

Yeah, mine would walk away from a 6.5 all day long. I had a built 700R4 behind it also.

    6.2 porous block?

I haven't gotten that far yet have to flip it over and get the pan off it. I had a Banks turbo on my 86 M1031 and it ran fine. I don't know if I want to get into this thing too far.

    6.2 porous block?

I just regained consciousness, I'm looking at a rebuilt 6.5 Navistar GEP engine for it.

    6.2 porous block?

That Detroit 4-53T swap is looking better now.

    6.2 porous block?

Well it's official, this block is junk. I ground off more JB weld or WHATEVER TF the previous owner smeared on it and found two hairline cracks. Look in between the red sharpie lines just above the arrows. I paid $700.00 for this POS.

Here I go again, ANOTHER junk 350 block .................

Even covered engines left outside are a risk. Water and critters can get into the intake and exhaust manifolds. I plugged the exhaust manifolds with expanded foam and Gorilla taped the intake on my 6.2 I've had in outside storage. I also completely covered it with a one ton demolition bag. This...

    6.2 porous block?

I have to run this thing until I can get it to sweat and see if does leak through the block. I had cold garden hose water going to it when I test ran it with the thermostat removed.

New steering box and now this....

With the noise it's making, that box was not rebuilt properly.

    6.2 porous block?

I don't know what I'm going to do now. This engine supposedly has 85K miles on it which I suspect is BS seeing as it has a rebuilt IP and rebuilt alternator. It ran great when I pallet ran it. It lit right up with no smoke or noise other than these things sound like they are coming apart...

Magnaflows sound nice, I had them on my 97 Z71.

    6.2 porous block?

I'm well aware of the web cracking lore. It's the result of running a 6.2 like it's a 454.

    6.2 porous block?

Now I'm a little leery about using this engine. I'm going to wheel that area down to metal and see what's going on with it.

    6.2 porous block?

Would the factory do that, or would they reject the block? From what I understand, the factory rejected a ton of these early 6.2 blocks due to poor castings.

    6.2 porous block?

I was starting to prep an engine I bought last year to swap into my 84 K30 and found what looks like JB weld smeared on the block right under a freeze out plug. Are these engines known for porous block castings? I don't see any cracks but that doesn't really mean anything.

So, the 350 was rebuilt, huh ?????

This is the engine you bought for 100 bucks?

    Wheel Adapters

Sorry for the late reply. Yes they are hub centric on both the axe hub side and the wheel flange side.
  23. 84 M1008

    Wheel Adapters

Did you have to tap them in with a soft hammer? They should have a snug fit on the hub to be hub centric. I have similar ones on my K30 to adapt duall wheels. They are forged steel and have a 1/4 in flange on the outer face that fits inside the wheels making them hub centric.

    Wheel Adapters

Are they hub centric, or lug centric? It makes a big difference. You want hub centric wheels, spacers and adapters. They are far safer.

    Wheel Adapters

I had adapters changing the lug bolt pattern. Never again.
