And adapt my 208 transfer case with a clocking ring. I don't know about a 3 to 500 dollar difference. The controller is far more than 500 dollars alone.

I have a 6.2, it's drinking fuel with 4.56 gears. I need to lower the rpm's for the highway.

    Gear Vendors

Hey guys, anyone running a Gear Vendors behind the TH400/NP208? I've seen some used incomplete units on eBay without electronics. Question is, can I engage the shifting solenoid with a simple switch? I did this to lock up my 700R4 in my old M1031-K30, and it worked fine.

    well shoot..

I was thinking that same thing. The roller chain is the way to go. You're really at the mercy of the person that built the engine. At least when you put it all together you'll know what you have.

    well shoot..

Any bearing failure is a big problem. Lucky it was found in time before the engine came apart.

    well shoot..

Question is, why did the cam bearing crack? Is this common?

    Maaco?

Sand it down, prime it and plasticoat it. It lasts 7 to 10 years depending on the climate.

    Sticking with the 700

If it's not leaking or hard to shift, I'd leave it alone.

    Dana 60 front axle toasted.

I'm looking to slow the engine down on the highway, it's a 6.2 so it doesn't accelerate anyway. It's primary a daily driver to work. I don't plan on pulling a trailer or a barn over with it so the 4.56 gears had to go anyway. The front axle going south is the perfect excuse .

    Dana 60 front axle toasted.

I went to the rpm calculator shortly before my last comment. With 4.56 gears and the 37's I'm turning 2551 rpm's @ 60 mph. The 4.11 gears will put me at 2294 rpm's @ 60 mph. I may not need the GV after all. I figured the front axle has to be done anyway so I might as well do the rear also.

    Dana 60 front axle toasted.

Ok, now that we've determined that re building the axle is the way to go, I might as well throw a set of 4.10's at it front and rear. That will drop my engine rpm's by 275.

Most any of the surplus military vehicle outfits offer take out as well as rebuilt axles. Boyce Equipment offers a rebuilt Dana 60 for approximately $3300.00. I searched today for a take out but after reading some of the input here, im more than likely going to get mine rebuilt.

Lol, old gears checked for run out with new bearings and seals with a $2500 paint job I would imagine .

I found a few surplus takeout's for $1500 complete. I also found rebuilds for $2800.

    Dana 60 front axle toasted.

I was doing some PM on my newly acquired truck and discovered that the front axle is pretty much done. The pinion is flopping around and the universals joints on both knuckles are shot. So should I rebuild it or roll a complete surplus axle under the truck? The labor alone to rebuild it will...

    turbo 400 to 700r4 swap......should i do it?

An R4 from a Camaro? It'll be toast in no time. Get the GV. A stage 2 R4 isn't $1300.00 transmission. I looked into a stage 2 super duty for about $3200.00 without a core. That 400 is a superior transmission to the R4 hands down.

    Overdrive choice.

That's what I was thinking Dutch. The GV is far less labor intensive, and I wouldn't have to get a 27 spline TC. Been there done that with my M1031.

    Overdrive choice.

Thanks Dutch, I've weighed the pros and cons of of each and I fully agree that the TH400 with the GV is the way to go. I had an R4 in my 86 M1031, but I didn't put enough miles on it to make a judgment on its longevity. The GV is actually less expensive than the R4. A super duty R4 will set you...

700R4, or a Gear Vendors behind the TH400? I'm really leaning towards the Gear Vendors. I've heard the 700R4 doesn't hold up with the 6.2.

These military trucks are barbaric. Lol

Not to mention the comfy ride.

What did you replace factory radio with?

    I have a 6.2. I'd need a Fender amp to hear it.

My 97 1500 Vortec 350 was a surprisingly fast truck.
