    Vortec heads vs 350 exhaust.

I had spent a lot of time researching manifolds vs headers when I made my decision. Found some articles that included dyno runs. For the most part the 2.5" ramhorn manifolds were within 5-6 ft/lbs up to about 4,600 RPM. Then some great gains above that RPM. With my 400 or the 383 I have now...

    Vortec heads vs 350 exhaust.

I had ramhorn manifolds on my old 400 and when that engine died I put them on a vortec headed 383. I didn't want to mess with headers either- these cast iron manifolds haven't leaked. Although I'd stay away from the 2.5" center dump- had to have the motor mount clamshell modified for clearance...

    Yukon Posi vs Detroit TruTrack

I have the truetrac in the front of my truck and a friend has it in the rear of his. I'd take it over a posi as there are no "wear parts". Just gears. The gears like conventional oil vs synthetic oil.

Bilstein ,Kyb monotube ,Belltech ....daily driving opinions

I had the Bilstein blue/yellow shocks on my old '78 K15. When I bought my '77 K20 it had the original shocks and I put on the ORD front shackles (OEM ones were bent/worn out) and some KYB monoMAX shocks. At the time these shocks were about 1/2 the price of the Bilstein blue/yellows. I thought...

    TrueTrac for rear axle...likes/dislikes?

After I put a truetrac in the front axle of my truck a friend/co-worker was interested in how I said how I can't tell it is even there. It "feels" like an open differential. So he started reading on them and then installed one on the rear axle of his 2001 Silverado 1500. He tows a snowmobile...

    15" vs 17" wheels

There are some rough formulas online about if you move up a few tire sizes or switch to a heavier load rating of the tire. I've tried some of them, and it was kinda close. But I've used the chalk method to find the proper street pressure. Set the tire pressure, grab some sidewalk chalk and...

    15" vs 17" wheels

I moved up to 17" from 16" as there aren't a whole lot of choices in 16 anymore. And zero beadlock wheels in that size unless it custom made. Might check out prices first though. 15" are cheaper for the most part. At least in General and BFG the 15" were around $50/tire cheaper. And at least...

    15" vs 17" wheels

If you air down the tires for more traction off road then 15" wheels will be a bit nicer. Gives you more sidewall to flex and a bigger footprint.

    NP203... no 4 wheel drive

I kept thinking about my problem... have a hard time thinking that I broke the front output shaft or the chain. My chain has never made the popping noise that is typical with a loose chain skipping teeth. I've been looking at diagrams of the 203 and wondering if it was possible if the shift...

    NP203... no 4 wheel drive

I called a local transmission shop that was recommended by a friend. Been around for something like 37 years. Asked about rebuilding the 203... the guy chuckled and said he can't even remember when the last time they rebuilt one of those. Had no idea if he could get parts. Said most are boat...

    Front Posi/Limited Slip Options

Eaton Truetrac is what I have in the front D44 on my truck. You don't even know it's there compared to an open differential. Perfectly quiet, lets me steer on snow/mud/ice. But transfers power over to the other tire when needed. Its been awesome.

    NP203... no 4 wheel drive

ORD has a rebuilt 205 for $1,000 but then I'd have to redo both of my new driveshafts and I'd have even less of a low range. If I'm going to re-do the driveshafts then it would be so I can get a nice very low range. Starting to lean towards just fixing or slapping another 203 in there until I...

    NP203... no 4 wheel drive

I thought about it- but when I priced out all the bits and pieces it came to the same price as a 4 speed Atlas transfer case. And the Atlas is smaller and lighter. (doesn't need a second crossmember added).

    NP203... no 4 wheel drive

Of course when I have stuff to do, work calls me in all weekend. But finally got a chance to look at it. I watched underneath as my daughter shifted it around. Both of the levers that go into the transfer case are moving. I've keep the stock linkage lubricated. I jacked up the front end...

    NP203... no 4 wheel drive

So a few weeks ago I was testing my new tires. Drove up and over a pass. 4wd worked fine. Put it in 2wd and drove down the 10 mile dirt road and then got on the highway. Probably 10 miles down the highway while cruising at 60 mph there was a sudden bang/clunk noise and I saw my transfer case...

    Coolant tank keeps puking coolant

I have a weird intake manifold for my vortec heads (P/N 7116). It has a special passageway under the carb/TBI to help warm the manifold for cold weather. I'd get a small puddle for coolant inside my manifold after the truck sat overnight. It would then burn off when the truck was started...

    Vortex heads

I'll throw my 2 cents in here about Vortec heads... They don't like cold weather in winter. These heads got rid of the heat passage under the carb/TBI. Ice cold intake manifold is not good for keeping fuel suspended into the incoming air. Fuel drops out, puddles on the intake manifold floor...

    Coolant tank keeps puking coolant

Due to a porous casting on my Edelbrock intake manifold (I even bought a second one, same issue). I dropped from a 16 lb radiator cap to something like a 8 lb? 9 lb? and do not have problems with coolant dumping into my expansion tank. It operates the same, just at a lower pressure and my...

    Rough country trash?

I had 4" Rough Country front lift springs on my old '78 K10. They did ride very rough, but I didn't have much money 20+ years ago and I was a lot younger... I'm all about a smoother ride now and some articulation if you are going to do off roading. I'd recommend the Tuff Country EZ ride front...

Snow wheeling. Now I want to re-configure...

So am I.... I've spent most of the year traveling and just finally got home. Arizona, Minnesota, back to Arizona, then 2.5 hours south of my house for Thanksgiving week. There isn't much snow around here yet... needs to start snowing! Today I finally got enough time to get my CO2 bottle filled...

    VW Atlas Cross Sport

I've had a lot of Audis and VW. Currently have 2 of the Touaregs. On my older 07 touareg the front wheels like to hold onto the center hub- so I cleaned the hubs up and put just a little bit of anti-seize on the hub. The wheels do not stick anymore.

    VW Atlas Cross Sport

In the spare tire kit they have a plastic threaded insert that when you remove the first lug bolt from the top part of the wheel you thread that in. It then becomes a hanger for the wheel to hang off of. Plastic isn't the worlds strongest, so a few companies make metal ones. I keep 2 metal ones...

    Very rough/rocky desert trail cruising

Oh- I also forgot... if you are going to spend the whole day at speeds of 35 mph or so don't forget to air your tires down. Some guys run tires at max pressure all the time. Now it depends on your tire size and what width wheel but even dropping to lets say 20-23 psi will allow the tire to...
