400 SBC Build - Tight Budget

Well, it’s taken a minute…but the engine checked out, we did have to take it to .040 over. Blew up my budget as it came out to a little over 7k. Now just trying to figure out what kind of power I can expect from it. AFR 1001 Enforcer heads (195/64) Keith Black pistons -18cc Full roller setup...

    PBFab Level 3 Dropmember Installation

Wow! I can't believe it's been nearly 3 months since I started this post. I just got my dropmember parts kit back from powder coat! I went with a big production shop in Spokane Valley's industrial park, it took awhile but had everything sandblasted and powder coated for just under $250!

    PBFab Level 3 Dropmember Installation

Sun is starting to shine! Engine goes into the machine shop Friday (04/28)! Just started laying out all the parts included in my PBFab dropmember kit, I'm going to do my best to document this journey with photo's. If anyone has tackled this kit your feedback / cautionary tales would be...

400 SBC Build - Tight Budget

** UPDATE** Local shop is backed up a bit, so my engine is scheduled for hot tank and mag late next month. Good news is it only costs $50, so I'll know if she's worth building without having to drop to much cash on it. I was quoted $1600 for a small block rebuild which includes machine work...

400 SBC Build - Tight Budget

Engine is mostly torn down, left crank, pistons and cam in. Not sure how much of this stuff the shop might want to see? I’ve attached a few pics, not sure if it helps. Cylinders are smooth with maybe a light swirl or crosshatch. Top of each cylinder has an easily removed carbon build up, but...

400 SBC Build - Tight Budget

ON second thought, I'm not in a hurry. The engine came with an Edelbrock performer intake and a nice set of long-tube headers, the carb was a bit ****, an old carter I think. I'm going to approach the engine shop with what you've posted here and see what happens! I left the stock heads...

400 SBC Build - Tight Budget

Well geez, I'd like to thank everybody for the feed-back and opinions. It's been eye-opening annnnnnnd, a little soul crushing..lol. I was really looking forward to the build experience. It just doesn't seem to make sense, JEGS has a New Blueprint 400ci crate motor claiming 508hp / 437TQ for...

400 SBC Build - Tight Budget

So maybe just rod and crank bearings while they are out, run a stock low end and put the money into a really nice set of heads? I think I may need new lifters / CAM I knocked the tray of organized lifters off the bench, no way they are going back where they came from..lol Right now the largest...

400 SBC Build - Tight Budget

Hey all! My kids talked me into keeping my '84 "old school", and passing on the trendy LS swap. Although I'm looking forward to the build, it will be the my first "total rebuild". I fully intend to tap this great communities knowledge to minimize mistakes. I thank you all in advance...

Well done! I'm excited to here that your happy with the outcome. I'm going to be converting my steering to Rack and Pinon as part of my PB Fab dropmember kit. The kit does include a stand-off bearing support due to the new steering shaft run.

Do I rebuild my SBC or swap for an LS3?

I unfortunately find myself in a similar situation, I recently pulled my 400 SBC to prepare for the Porterbuilt dropmember I have on order, figured it would be a great chance to rebuild my 400, it ran great, didn't smoke just leaks oil everywhere. Was planning a 450-500 hp build but find myself...

Have you looked at the Choppin Block Dropmember? Not as complete as the Porterbuilt kit. but nearly 2k cheaper?

    Dropmember - Need options

Hey all! Looking to order a front dropmember to put in over the winter, get that layout looking correct. Porterbuilt has a really nice setup, but with everything required I was quoted $4,700. Choppinblock has a nice setup as well and looks to be around $2,900 - but still requires purchase of...

    Air bag suspension.

Mine is sitting on 20" wheels and to go any bigger I would need to modify the heater box and/or have control arms that shorten the track and move wheels forward an inch? Am I missing something? Is there another way to squeeze 22 or 24" wheels in there?
