    I broke my new truck

LOL. I think I need to work on my testing. Yesterday I take the truck out for a drive at night, turn the lights on and notice the right turn signal on the dashboard stays on all the time while driving!! WTF! But the actual blinkers work fine. So right dash light is on, but if I turn right, it...

    I broke my new truck

OK!! So I swapped the brake/blinker LED for an incandescent one, and that fixed. Sonnnnofagun! Prior to that, because I am hard-headed, I removed the tail light harness to check for any shorts. I redid some connections that looked just old and rusty and added a ground wire to the passenger...

    I broke my new truck

Does not seem to be a ground issue. I cut off the light socket in question and used a test light and still see the issue. Perhaps somewhere in the rear harness the wire for the light (brown) and the wire for the blinker/brake (green) are touching? BTW, the rear light harness is grounded at a...

    I broke my new truck

@Bextreme04 Yes, I was going to check that. Raining today and truck is outside. Thank you for the tip. BTW, random question. This is an 86 C10. Water gets into it by the doors it seems. It has the weather stripping around the cab. Is there also supposed to be weatherstripping on the actual...

    I broke my new truck

@Ellie Niner I was starting to think that. It all seemed to work before I had to replace all the horn and blinker wires inside the steering. I was also considering a special LED Flasher; I read that those work with both LEDs and regulars. Or swap to regular bulbs seems worth a try. Thank you...

    I broke my new truck

Here is the issue I am trying to solve. When I have the headlights ON, and I use the right turn signal, the dash right turn signal light stays on and the tailight blinker doesn't flash (it might be ON, hard to tell). The turn signal control goes back to the middle but the dash light/taillight...

    I broke my new truck

@80BrownK10 I don't think so. The light bulb works, just doesn't blink. I t was working 100% minutes early. The two things that changed were: I joined the rear harness wires to the rest of the harness by using splices, but that's like 4 wires into matching colors. And second one is that I drove...

    I broke my new truck

I jinxed it. All effed up again. On the dashboard the right hand blinker is on all the time, the left blinks. But on the actual tailights, nothing blinks. Super happy for 1.5 hrs.

    I broke my new truck

I fixed it!!!! So it seems the reason that the brake lights were not working is that the connection at the end of the horn switch (which is brand new), the white wire was not getting a good connection. The white wire controls the brake light. On the female end of this connector, I had replaced...

    I broke my new truck

@SrMousse Totally. I have learned so much! But I just want this truck running so I can drive it!!!!!

    I broke my new truck

OK; so a victory and a step backwards. I went down the rabbit hole and checked wire continuity from the firewall to the rear harness connector, and it's fine. I then decided since the rear wire harness had a bunch of splices and also a tow hitch wire kit that is not used, to just cut it all out...

    I broke my new truck

oK; so I changed the light socket but that didn't do anything. I went under the steering wheel and used a test light to see if the blinker was working from over there. This is the connector that connects to the wires that come out of the horn assembly. The yellow connector made the test light...

    I broke my new truck

Here is where I am with this today. I realize like someone mentioned that the brake wire is also the wire that controls the blinker. On the driver side rear is the yellow wire. Per the awesome diagram. I cut the light socket out and tested for power coming into the yellow wire when the brake is...

    I broke my new truck

@Bextreme04 Thank you for that amazing diagram! And @Turbo4whl for clarifying. Probably will start with replacing the bulb sockets and the shady enclosure. You can see in this hack job of a tailight that they felt duct tape was a key ingredient and it also looks like the enclosure had a date...

    I broke my new truck

I found the wire harness right next to the bumper. It has a square connector to connect to the wires coming from the cab. My 86 has a bulb for brake/light, a bulb for blinker/hazard, and a bulb for reverse. Either way I tested continuity from the socket connector to the light sockets in the...

    I broke my new truck

Thank you @Bextreme04 !! When you say "There is a connector right at the back that connects the frame harness to the rear light harness", is this like under the frame? By the cab? That's what my neighbor thought as well.

    I broke my new truck

This is a little like that story about trying to stop a damn with your fingers. Headlight issue is solved, or probably solved. But then noticed my left (driver) stop light and blinker don't work. Right one works fine. The tail light turns on with the lights on but not the brake light; it's the...

    I broke my new truck

I was reading about and it could be that the headlight is bad. Apparently the top light (low beam) has 2 filaments, one for high and one for low. If one filament is burnt out, then when you switch high beams the light is off. Will get a new headlight tomorrow and test the connectors as well. Thanks.

    I broke my new truck

@Goldie Driver you were right. The 15A fuse for the turn signal was blown. That was it. Now the truck is 91.1% correct, even the stupid dome light which is the reason I got into this whole mess works!!! Now I have this issue which had started before that when I turn the high beams on, the...

    I broke my new truck

First, good news. Trucks starts and no smoke coming out of the steering column!! So that's great. I need to adjust the high beam switch forward a hair so it 'clicks'. But for some reason my directionals don't work at all, even with the truck on. The hazards work fine. I haven't put the whole...

    I broke my new truck

Thank you for the positive thoughts. At least I figured the ignition switch part (although I misinstalled the high beam rod so need to take apart). Will check on the weekend.

    I broke my new truck

Thank you! I managed to put it back in the correct way. I found the Jazzman Saginaw step by step and understood the lever was not engaging with the pins that push the rod to the ignition switch. Thanks for confirming this. I watched a couple vids and it is like you say on the lock plate; it's...

    I broke my new truck

Update! I got the new horn and blinker wiring from LMC Trucks, and I also repaired a power orange wire that went to the fuse box. Now I am putting all together again and I am stuck in two places: 1) The ignition lock when I install it, has no spring feel to it. I see how it works there's this...

    I broke my new truck

Well, maybe if I went to my local shop I could’ve had them look it up and probably they could’ve ordered it. Sometimes at the store they don’t know that well and then I don’t know if they ordered the righ thing.

    I broke my new truck

Not that I found. I've bought parts from 6 different places to get all this: LMC for the wiring switches, Sherco for wires in the right colors; Ebay for a column housing (which I may not use, it's a little different); Repair Connector for bare terminals that fit into switches; CJ Pony for...
