    New 383 high oil consumption

Thanks for the thoughts on valve covers and PCV system. I’ve definitely considered the PCV system as possibly part of the problem, mostly because the lack of smoke, clean plugs, and all cylinders with same compression. Tonight I just replaced the valve for the second time, this time with an AC...

TBI '87 R2500 454 Suburban Runs Like Crap

What happens when you cycle the fuel pump? There should be a lead on the relay that’s on the firewall - hook up 12v to that guy and it will turn on your pump and run fuel thru the regulator and back to tank thru return line. You should hear it but you shouldn’t see any fuel in the injector...

My A833 truck didn’t work out - what about a Saginaw Three?

Get it and put a 292 in it! I’ve always wanted to build one of those. And of course keep the Saginaw!

TBI '87 R2500 454 Suburban Runs Like Crap

Injector sticking open? Impressive list of stuff you’ve done but didn’t see injector replacement or rebuild in there? I also had a fuel gushing problem after I took my TB apart last time - turns out I left off the o-rings at the bottom of the injectors! I’m thinking you might want to change...

    New 383 high oil consumption

Well changed oil and filter this weekend. 6 qts of Rotella T4 (conventional) and 2 qt AC Delco oil filter. We'll see what happens.

    New 383 high oil consumption

Thanks all for the input. Just to be clear this is a roller cam. L31 stock vortec cam, lifters, pushrods, spider/retainers, etc. to be exact. And CompCams roller tip rockers, 1.6 ratio. Yeah, I'm thinking 10w30 Rotella now. I agree with @Frankenchevy about the spread between the winter...

    New 383 high oil consumption

Thanks for the info and thoughts - good stuff. I’m definitely realizing my mistake now with the Mobil 1. I guess I thought the 400-500 miles I already had on the motor with Dino oil was sufficient and I also was hoping it would help the situation not make it worse. Bad assumptions. I’m going...

    New 383 high oil consumption

Nothing special, I believe it was Chevron Delo 10w-30. I changed oil 300 miles ago and used Mobil 1, 5w-20. Also eliminated the factory oil cooler, stalled a standard oil filter adapter and went to the 2 qt AC delco filter.

    New 383 high oil consumption

Only about 1k. Too soon to tell? I’ve taken it out in the rolling hills a few times and gotten on it hard - read that it could possibly seat the rings doing that. Didn’t seem to help

    New 383 high oil consumption

I’ve been hoping for something simple for a while now, have actually been in denial. But I can’t deny 1/3 to 1/2 quart in 300 miles any longer. Funny thing is plugs do not look oil fouled to me at all, and the (hot) compression is good and consistent in all cylinders (approx 180 at three hits...

    Motorvation Stage 2 Chip advantages

x2 on all of @4WDKC posts. ZIF socket is way to go. It changes the number of pins by two I think so then you can use a very common chip - SST 27SF512. Dave W (that's his user name, his company's name is Old School EFI) on Gearhead is the guy to talk to for the ZIF socket. On top of the...

    Steering box leaking

Will do. When I replace the input seal I'll suck all the fluid I can out of the pump with a turkey baster (what I did when I put the stop leak fluid in). When I do the full rebuild definitely will do a full flush too. Thanks.

    Steering box leaking

Thanks. I just bought the same Edelmen kit on Amazon.

    Steering box leaking

Awesome write up. I'm not going to convert to hydroboost any time soon (who knows maybe some day) but the tear down and rebuild sections will be huge for me. Thanks! Your write up basically convinced me to replace just the leaking input seal now and then rebuild my spare box another day when...

    Steering box leaking

I'm 95% sure it's leaking at the input shaft seal. It's getting worse too - there was probably a quarter cup of fluid on the concrete after I drove it yesterday. I've tried stop leak a couple of times now, doesn't help a bit. So I have an extra box from a '90 3/4 ton 4x4 burb laying around...

    Weird brake pad wear

Well looks like we have consensus with guide pins - new Delcos from Amazon just got delivered today along worth new Wagner heavy duty pads. Annoying that the rotors won’t come till tomorrow - need those first not last. Thanks, all

    Refresh a gauge bezel?

Thanks all for all the info. The chrome application for models is really cool but I think for my bezel it’s going to be somewhere between “install it as is” or tidy it up just a bit with the chrome pen! Loved the Peterbilt model!

    Weird brake pad wear

I forgot to mention, with all this I haven't had any real braking problems, stops well, does't pull to one side; I don't think they're dragging. Just a ton of noise from that wear indicator. It actually fooled me for quite some time since I've had a lot of problems with noise from the back...

    Weird brake pad wear

Doing front brakes and noticed some weird wear. It's just this one pad -- passenger side, outboard position, wearing much more on the trailing end vs the leading end. Down to the wear indicator and making noise. Last time I did brakes I replaced pads and calipers, but not rotors. This time...

    Clock refurbish website

You might try some of the Corvette sites. I'm sure GM's pre-quartz clocks were all pretty similar. Those old mechanical clocks were fickle - the still running (and keeping somewhat decent time) GM mechanical clocks are unicorns. Many Vette clocks, including mine, have been converted to quartz...

    Refresh a gauge bezel?

Cool that you were there and we saw the same stuff. Yeah, $15 was a good price and then I offered $10 not expecting to get it but he said sure. (but I think it may have been the guy's buddy or something) Did you go to both expo and PIR or just PIR? Get anything good? In addition to the...

    Refresh a gauge bezel?

so I’ve never liked my fake wood grain gauge bezel (or the dash and door panel trim) that they put in the ‘90 and ‘91 Silverado burbs. But today I found this bezel at the Portland Swap Meet and picked it up for just $10. Any tips on a refresh for these? Id specifically like to clean up the...

Trying to find the connector to turn off service engine

Unless you've done any changes inside the chip, which it sounds like you haven't, TBI should be set at 0 degrees with the tan/black wire disconnected. Engine should be warmed up when you do it. Once you set it at zero computer takes care of everything else.

    Let's talk oil

Just put Mobil 1 5w-20 in my new 383. I sure hope the the bit about synthetic causing rings to unseat is incorrect. This is my first time using synthetic in one of my old cars - I've always worried it would seep past seals but I'm giving it a shot this time. I also eliminated the factory oil...
