    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

I know it seems weird, but I think I'm going to be able to use stock pump, stock pressure. TBI 454s and 350s used the same pump and pressure, I believe. So with my 454 injectors that flow quite a bit higher than the originals I should be OK. At least that's what the tuner I'm using tells me...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Yeah, I went through a similar thought process. I had good luck with this guy before, so I went with what I know. He even did the Vortecs for my Vette back then and actually found cracks in both heads - one of them he could deal with but the other was too far gone and he found me a better core...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

I think total is in the neighborhood of $1600 for the assembled short block. He'll hot tank/block prep, bore, clearance for 383, rebuild rods, order all the parts, etc. Install cam bearings, etc. Balance. Not sure if he'll line bore it or not. Same guy that did my Corvette motor - still...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Starting a thread for my build - just took the bare block, heads, and some other parts to the machinist today! In a nutshell, it's going to be a 4.030 bore x 3.75 stroke, 383 cid, 4-bolt block from a '90 3/4 ton burb (one piece RMS). Eagle stroker, cast steel crank. Original rods, rebuilt...

    Vortec heads

I've been gathering parts for a vortec head swap on my '91 TBI for some time now. I've got rebuilt heads, GM spread bore (q-jet) intake for Vortec heads, adapter plate to bolt on the TBI unit, and complete roller valve train including cam from a vortec block. I also just recently bought some...

383 TBI vs 454 TBI, need opinions

Good to know, thanks. I think buying an entire vortec truck will exceed the budget but never know.....may run across one for cheap some day Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

383 TBI vs 454 TBI, need opinions

Cool! We had one of those when I was a kid, it was dark red and a '78 I think, but pretty much the same. Didn't have an 8.1 in it, though, I can say that for sure. :) I think it was one of those economy V-8s they had back then, smaller than a 305. 267 maybe? I've actually thought about...

383 TBI vs 454 TBI, need opinions

I was too late on the draw and missed the 454 Burb. Back to building what I got: vortec 383, roller cam Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

roller cam questions, suggestions, used ones, or flat tappet?

Another option: buy a vortec 350 rebuilder. I bought one for $300 on CL. I kept the complete valve train and heads, sold the short block for $100 or $150. This was a good way to go for me because I wanted to use the vortecs (downside: only one of them was useable) AND convert to roller cam...

383 TBI vs 454 TBI, need opinions

That's right, they did. I think they had 205 t-cases, though. But I'm thinking the NP 241 will do ok behind a 454. That's what they used in 4x4 big block burbs and pickups in the GMT 400 trucks, correct? Did you swap to a big block radiator? Did MPG change significantly after the swap?

383 TBI vs 454 TBI, need opinions

I'm still thinking about the 454 swap. The 95 burb in my OP is still for sale - texted the guy last night. Did you have to change out front springs for the increased weight? My burb is a 3/4 ton - I'm thinking I'll be ok? It doesn't even notice me when I stand on the front bumper. Also...

    Harmonic balancer bolt

Be careful with that bolt! I broke the end of it off inside the crank when I was installing a new balancer on my '76 Corvette with the engine in the car. It looked to me like the balancer still had a long way to go so I kept turning - it was already bottomed. Not smart. Worked out well for...

    Tbi conversion help

Not sure if this would be helpful or not but I'm pretty sure I still have the ECM from my '90 parts rig. It was a '90 V2500 burb with a 350 and TH400 tranny. I probably have other TBI parts from that rig, too, if there was something else specific. If this might work let me know and I'll dig...

383 TBI vs 454 TBI, need opinions

Yeah, I gotta do something. I was pulling a lightly loaded small utility trailer over a (not too steep) mountain pass this weekend and tranny was dropping down to 2nd off and on just to maintain 55 mph. I even have 4.10s. Would love to go for a '97+ vortec BBC, but not sure what I'd do...

383 TBI vs 454 TBI, need opinions

I'm trying to decide between building a 383 with vortec heads vs swapping in a stock (relatively) 454 TBI from a donor truck. I've been planning the 383 for a while now and have accumulated some parts: a 4-bolt main, '90 350 for the block, rebuilt vortec heads, GM 4-barrel vortec intake and...

Free Barn Doors! These are now free. I won't be able to do any shipping but Anyone local (Portland, OR / Vancouver, WA) let me know if you want them. If I don't get any response by Saturday I'm going to scrap them - I would j hate doing that though, especially the one that is dent free...

14 bolt, Full-floater drum brake squeak?

Thanks for all the info! Really appreciate it. On Friday I took the burb on a 200 Mile trip and in anticipation of that, just to be sure, I did ended up pulling the drum to check things out. You're right - it didn't take as long as I remember, probably because I more or less knew what I was...

Possible wiped cam lobe, two different cylinder heads.

Just a point of interest for ya on the 882 head - those were the stock heads on my '76 corvette. I still have them but switched to vortecs when I rebuilt the motor 5 or so years ago. Not the worst head GM ever made but not great either. I think other cars had em besides Vettes. Sent from...

14 bolt, Full-floater drum brake squeak?

Thanks! That's what I was thinking too - I'll try adjusting. When I rebuilt the rear brakes I took the drums to a parts house to have them turned. They wouldn't do it - just slightly out of spec. I elected not to replace them I might be living with that now Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
