    Water pump failure destroys radiator

Answers to some of your questions/comments: The reason the fan is spaced forward is that I've installed the much longer radiator that was only used in the 2WD 454 models. The fan shroud that fits that radiator is not very deep, because the 454 engine sticks forward toward the radiator more...

How much doea your fuel tank hold?

    I'm thinking it's a 40 gallon tank. I've never put 40 in it, but I've put over 35.

    Oil pressure Issues

Had a buddy who had a Fram blow apart internally, sending debris to the crank bearings, destroying the engine. Fram told him they wouldn't cover it. I had one fail the same day it was installed. The drove 175mi non-stop to a major city, and when it encounter rush hour traffic, and traffic...

    Water pump failure destroys radiator

Here's how I've had the fan mounted, for about 2 or 3 years.......with that 1-1/4" fan spacer. Could that have caused the water pump shaft to sheer off at the front of the pump, because the weight of the fan & clutch is moved so much further out from the bearing in the end of the pump?

    Water pump failure destroys radiator

The water pump shaft sheered off, flush with the front of the pump, while driving on the freeway last night. This sent the radiator fan w/ clutch, pulley, and water pump hub, forward, into my brand new extra-long radiator.......carving a huge section out of the radiator. The spinning fan then...

Upgrade: Installing the longer 2WD 3/4 ton 454 radiator

I've got 2 complete radiator set ups if anyone's interested. The catch is that the radiators are for the 6.2L diesel. The good news is that both radiators should really be cleaned and rodded out prior to use, so if you have an existing 4 row radiator, you can simply have the tanks from that...

    SM465 getting hot?

I'd suggest purchasing an infrared temp gun and seeing what your actual temps are. Maybe you're just experiencing more heat because of outside air temps (hot/humid summer weather/hot pavement).

What have you done to your square lately??

You'll love having the front and rear a/c working again. I converted mine over to R134a after purchasing it in '04. With both blowers on low, it gets cold enough to almost be uncomfortable, even with outside temps in the 90's. And what did I do today? Finally fixed the chirping/squealing...

    Chirping and squealing serpentine belt

SOLVED FINALLY... So the problem has continued, even after replacing the Serp belt. It would go away after 30min of driving, and not typically return until the next cold start. The noise would temporarily disappear, if the belt was given a shot of spray lubricant, but then come back even...

    Let's talk radiators

The dimensions given: 34x19 are the core dimensions for the long radiator you see in my photo. In other words, the 2WD 454 4-core sized radiator. The short version of that radiator (the radiator used in everything else, except the 6.2's) is 28x19 (core size).

    Let's talk radiators

My '90 Suburban isn't a daily-driver, it's a hauler and tower. Most of what it does is in the mountains, in the heat, towing a 2,400lb camper, plus an interior full of people and gear. One of the grades we climb takes 30min at about 35mph, another takes 45min......so not a lot of air flow...

What have you done to your square lately??

Yep, I can't bitch too much that a starter lasted 10yrs, except for the fact that it's had so little use....and had I had a properly working VOM, it would have been a 5min diagnosis, instead of the event it wound up becoming.

Upgrade: Installing the longer 2WD 3/4 ton 454 radiator

They're kinda "old school" and called: "Fold-A-Way" License Plate Step. They come up on ebay pretty regularly.

What have you done to your square lately??

Yep. And it's not just the crap parts and the time wasted at face value, but also the time you waste diagnosing because you're think, "It can't be that, I just replaced that." Like me last week; can't be that low mileage NAPA starter that just worked perfectly 1 mile and 10min ago, and has...

What have you done to your square lately??

Welcome to the world of crap quality parts. There probably wasn't 50k on the NAPA starter that just went out on me, and their P/S pump that's 10mos old and probably doesn't have 5k on it, clicks rapidly when the steering wheel is fully left or right, and appears to have a squeal in it for about...

Upgrade: Installing the longer 2WD 3/4 ton 454 radiator

Finally had a chance to get the camper out and tow with the new radiator. Engine coolant temps are rock steady, even climbing the long mountain grades where we always camp. Transmission temps performed similarly where normally I'd always see about 205-210F, it was running at 190F. Nice...

What have you done to your square lately??

That sure is a nice looking Suburban! Meanwhile..... My starter died an instant death. Started the truck, drove it 2mi. Shut it off, went to start it less than 5min later, and got nothing. Smacking it with a hammer wouldn't revive it, nor would jumping power form the battery connection...

    Help! Starter not cranking

Anyone know where C100 is located? I don't recall anything like that on my firewall. It would appear that I could test at "6" with the key in "start" mode, and that I should see 12v there during an attempt to start. It also looks like I should be able to jump from "2" to "6" and get the...

    Help! Starter not cranking

I'm looking at my factory 1990 Electrical Diagrams and Diagnosis Manual right now. It has a section on page A-36 that troubleshoots the starter. Basically is says if you don't have 12v at the PPL wire on the starter solenoid, then you should check for voltage at BAT-2 and BAT-3 at the ignition...

    Help! Starter not cranking

Ya, this is pissing me off big-time. Of course it's dark, the truck is in the parking lot of a store, all auto parts stores are closed....and it's been perfect, ever time I've driven it in the last month, just like it always has been. I find it hard to believe that the starter would suddenly...

    Help! Starter not cranking

1990 'burb w/ 5.7L and 4L60. Always 100% reliable and has never left me stranded. Fired it up tonight and drove 2 miles to the store. Shut it off for about 5min and then attempted to start it and drive away. No starter action at all. Not a click, nothing. I had my daughter bring over a...
