Got a Problem, Gonna Need Some Help Here....

Or you might find that getting an entire column out of a wrecking yard is fastest/easiest/most cost effective. They're probably a dime a dozen.

Have something i have never run into prior-when cold under ANY load it backfires

No need to look for a leak "above" the throttle plate, you already have one.......it's called incoming airflow. Leaks after the throttle plate are what cause lean running issues, because that is unmetered air (as you know). Those leaks will only affect idle, and won't be noticed when the choke...

Doesn't sound like you've actually done any diagnostics and are still just guessing.

    Anti theft?

I like watching the videos of the thief taking 10-15 seconds to use a hacksaw to make one cut through the steering wheel, bend one side of the cut away from the other side of the cut, and then slide The Club right off. Screwdriver pounded into the ignition key slot, and it's a done deal.

Have something i have never run into prior-when cold under ANY load it backfires

The reason why I think it's ignition, regardless of when you last put those AC's in there (there are many other components in an ignition system, as you know) is because it's a cold issue only, and you have popping out the exhaust....or at least "think" you have popping out the exhaust. It is...

Have something i have never run into prior-when cold under ANY load it backfires

Replace your spark plug with a QUALITY well known brand, and since you're there, replace the plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and coil wire. You'll be glad you did. I'll warn you up front. Use only OEM parts.

Upgrade: Installing the longer 2WD 3/4 ton 454 radiator

1low4x4, your link doesn't got to anything. Can you fix it? And maybe I missed it elsewhere, but what fans are you running?

    Mad max starter?

IMO, you don't need anything so elaborate. A simple kill switch hidden some where, that kills the fuel pump, or the spark, is all you need.

    Mad max starter?

The only "problem" with hidden stuff like this, is that the thief isn't deterred from breaking in. Sure, he may not be able to drive it away, but think of all the damage he may/might/will/could do during the break-in, and ignition strip/hot-wiring attempts. I'm a fan of the hidden stuff...

    Botched crank shaft install

Glad you got it solved and they took care of you. In case you don't know, plastigage comes in various thicknesses, based on what range of gap you are measuring. So find out what your gap should be, and pick the color (the range) of plastigage, accordingly. You're probably measuring a gap...

    K10 vs Raptor

My '95 Audi A6 Quattro Avant would have driven up that like it was dry pavement. Nice to see that square show them all what time it was.

    Botched crank shaft install

You never use force installing bearing shells. They simply snap into place with your fingers and that's it. Since you're new to this, IMO, you should stop right now, load the block and crank into your vehicle, and take them, and the bearing shells for the mains, and rods, back to the machine...

    Botched crank shaft install

When a crankshaft get's its bearing journals machined "under size" the machine shop can machine (called "turning") those journals to a variety of dimensions. They measure the existing journals, determine the amount of material that will need to be removed, in order to make them perfect again...

Starting problems..... where do I start

Is 5w-30 the correct viscosity for starting in your coldest temps? Don't waste your time cleaning spark plugs. Just purchase a quality brand set, make sure they're gapped correctly, and install them.

Upgrade: Installing the longer 2WD 3/4 ton 454 radiator

Thanks for the info! Can you provide more info about the "painless" harness, and about how you're sampling temperature? And I can't tell from your photo, but is your radiator the long version, with the 34" long core (about 38" total to the outside of the tanks). Or is yours the standard...

Upgrade: Installing the longer 2WD 3/4 ton 454 radiator

Yes, the big radiator has made a noticeable improvement, even over the shorter 4 row big block radiator that I'd been running for a couple years. Got 3 hot weather tows out of it last summer. The 3rd was even with 8 on board, plus the camper. I'm always camping at the same location, so I'm...

    Surging Idle: Thinking out loud

I'm thinking vacuum leak through the EGR (partially stuck "open" at all times). Or vacuum leak via the brake vac booster or it's hose. You can spray carb cleaner around the intake w/ the engine running, to look for intake manifold leaks. Any area you spray that results in a change in the...

Starting problems..... where do I start

Firstly, make sure you have the correct weight of engine oil, for your start temps. Oil that is the wrong weight (too thick when cold) can cause cold start issues because the cranking speed is simply too slow to light fuel. Similarly, makes sure your spark plug gaps aren't too wide. Wider...
