Whats you gas mileage on your squarebody truck?

^^Exactly^^ I wouldn't give up the 'burb for anything, but my DD is a 40+mpg VW Rabbit Diesel P/u. I've got a buddy doing similarly with a pair of mid-80's Honda hatchbacks. One for him, and one for she-who-must-be-obeyed. Once you step into the world 30-something mpg, or better...

    Center console jump seat found

Shipping label says: "4 Wheel Parts Wholesale" in Kaufman, TX No brand name showing, or instructions. It appears to mount on 4 steel legs shaped like this __/---- and bolts to a pair of bars under the seat, and then bolts through the floor. Man, I hate to drill through the floor.

Whats you gas mileage on your squarebody truck?

Keep the truck, and buy a small commuter car. If you can find a mid-80 Honda...if they still exist in your area. They get in high 40's, low 50's all day long, at 70ish. Or a V.W. from the 80's, like a Golf/Jetta will give 37mpg on the freeway.

    Center console jump seat found

Your wish is my command ^^ Does anyone have a nice grey lap belt they'd like to sell. It'd be nice to have one that matches the rest of the belts rather than a generic black one from NAPA.

    SBC headers for 'burb?

Mmm.....:shitsweak:......not spending 5-hundo on headers. The muffler is nothing special, just a big aluminized thing that looks almost identical to what was supplied as OE, just maybe slightly bigger. I'm still running the original cat. 277k on it, and it still works. I wonder if it's...

    Center console jump seat found

Been wanting to install a bench, so our daughter can ride up front, but didn't want to give up the armrests, and headrests of the captain's chairs, both for comfort and safety. So what pops up today on the local CL, brand new, still in the box, and in the correct grey "striped" velour...

    SBC headers for 'burb?

I've got a big Dynaflow? muffler on it now that replicated the OEM muffler, maybe just a bit bigger. It's just as quiet as it was when stock. My concern is whether the headers themselves are noisey, just by design, and by the fact that they are just pipes, and not thick, heavy, cast iron...

    SBC headers for 'burb?

Yeah, wasn't too concerned about the transition from headers to original system. I've got a buddy who owns the best exhaust shop in town.....and they're located 2 blocks away!! But, wanted to know mostly about noise levels, and fitment. One thing we love about the 'burb is it's quiet...

    SBC headers for 'burb?

Is there a header made that'll fit the SBC in my '90 Suburban. If so, are they louder than the cast iron manifolds? Modifications needed to install them, or are they bolt in? Or, can the stock manifolds be improved with some die-grinder love?

Can I install a big block radiator in my small block burb?

Thought I'd post a little update. Had our first camping trip since the upgraded radiator was installed. Air temps were in the mid to high 90's, and during our long slow 2 lane hill climbs, the temp needle would only get to maybe a needle width past vertical. Previously, the needle would be...

    A weird metallic clunk

Welcome Dave! Could definately be the box. There's a way to tighten the box up, but you have to really use finesse because a little bit goes a long way and you can create a binding situation within the box as you get the steering wheel turned close to full left or right. On the top of the...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Okay, gotcha. That's exactly what I wanted to know. While I have never rolled a set of mains into a SBC, or any V-8 for that matter, I've never had a problem rolling them into other engines, even the flanged thrust bearings will roll in. Again, not saying that it IS possible on a SBC, all...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Here's a photo I found online of the earlier rear main: Bottom line.......can I change the front and rear mains by just dropping the pan. Or, does the transmission and flex plate have to be removed to get the rear main shells out?

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

I'm confused (an possibly stupid too)... When I search for crankshaft bearings for a 1990 V1500 'burb with SBC, I get this: Which shows that all of the bearings are standard 2 piece bearings. I understand that the rear main seal is a standard round seal, like I'm used to seeing...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

So is the rear main, not a 2 bolt affair, where the main cap comes off and there's a bearing shell in the main cap, and a bearing shell still up in the bock above the crank? If it's not designed that way, then does that mean the transmission has to come out in order to replace the rear main?

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Yeah, now I reeeeeaaaly want to pull the pan and roll a set of rods and mains into it and replace the pump. Of course there's a bunch of things in the way of the oil pan bolts....hard lines for the engine oil cooler, support arms for the bell housing, lower trans bell housing cover, etc. So...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Okay, some test results.... Hooked up the 2,100lb tent trailer, and hauled up over our local 4mi long 6-7% freeway grade. Prior to the climb, I did a little 5mi round trip on the freeway, to get coolant, engine oil, and tranny oil up to temp. Climbing what we call, "The Grade" I had...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Good info, thanks. Makes me feel better....although I don't know why I'm worried about it now, it's been like this since buying it from the Goodwill Donation Center in 2004. I guess it's because camping season is upon us, and I'm thinking, "Is this the year that we grenade it on some long...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

The reason why I think the knock is crankshaft, is because it responds to the initial hit of oil pressure. Pistons and wrist pins don't get oil pressure. It's not the flex plate because the tranny has been out 3 times in the last 5 or 6 years, and we would have seen that. I initially...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Oh, okay, thanks! I don't know what's normal for an SBC. Mmm....maybe I don't need to take the pan off.

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Well, I decided to quit being a woos, and put a friggin' gauge in it. Just finished. Replaced the original brass pipe with an 1/8"NPT 2-1/2" long pipe, into a T that had 1/4" NPT on each side. The original sender went back in on the left, and on the right I put a street elbow and came...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

Thanks for the info guys. The knock, is faster, sorry that my graphic showed it as slow. And it's a very low, inside the engine knock, as opposed to a lifter or rocker type of knock. I think it's mains, but it could be a rod. It's definately oil pressure related, and goes away in the time...

Oil pressure gauge reads low and knock on cold start in small block

1990 Suburban with SBC.... Ever since buying our 'burb in 2004, with 225k on the original engine, the oil pressure has only readL COLD: about a needle width past the 30psi mark during cold running, idle, or rev'd. HOT: a needle with or so below the 30, idle and about on 30 hot at...

    AC repair

A/C repair is spendy. Yes, you'll need a new compressor, receiver-dryer, and the oriface/filter. It's a good idea to replace all the o-rings you can get to, with new viton versions. You'll also need Ester 100 oil to put into the new compressor. Then you'll need to pull a vacuum on the system...
