    Rough running when cold

I've never seen a self sealing head gasket leak, and I've seen and repaired hundreds. Plus, where we tow, the engine would have grenaded already, if there was a head gasket issue. We climb a 30mi long grade, from about 200' to 7,500', in 80-90*F temps, towing a 2,000lb pop-up camper. It's 2...

    Rough running when cold

Thanks for the detailed info. That's what I'm after. I'll report back as soon as I have a chance to check codes, and watch function, and then clean or replace the IAC. This engine has just rolled 182k, and for the most part, is original and never been touched really other than the Edelbrock...

    Rough running when cold

Thanks so much for posting all that. Do the IAC valves get funky inside and stop working properly.......or simply fail to function properly due to time and mileage? Or is it pretty rare to have one die? Reason I ask is that the idle seems kinda low once warmed up, especially with the a/c...

Just bought an 87 with 59K... think I know why it has so few miles on it.

The Smithsonian just called. They'd like their Suburban back! Man that thing is nice. I hope you don't do any mods to it at all. It's perfect as-is.

    cold air intakes

Where do the 2" ported throttle bodies come from? Do they adversely affect mileage? I put an Edelbrock intake on it just over a year ago, but didn't do any gasket matching. It's always gotten excellent mileage, both towing and empty, so any modding I do, I want to keep that into...

    Rough running when cold

Thanks! Bare with me. I don't have a factory service manual. -Where's the IAC located? -Where's the coolant temp sensor that feeds the ECM? -Where's the vac line that feeds the ECM? -Where's the diagnostic test port for reading the codes? I don't have a scan tool for GM stuff, but...

    Rough running when cold

The 'burb is running rough at idle, when cold, and it's progressively getting worse. It's fine once warmed up. A quick check with a timing light, and it's got spark at all 8 plug wires. Wires are brand new AC/Delco. Plugs are brand new AC's. Cap and rotor are a year old, and whatever NAPA...

    cold air intakes

Fantastic job on that dual inlet air cleaner housing, and thanks for sharing the photos. Like you, mine's also just a hauler, so squeezing more torque out of it would be nice.

    Factory Style Seatbelts

www.seatbeltplanet.com does great work and can probably rebelt your original stuff. They custom made the 4 point belt for my center console jump seat last year. Called the owner and spoke with him in person. Fantastic is all I have to say, and the belt looks like a factory item.

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

Update: Just back from a camping trip where we were towing the pop-up camper about 11hrs round trip. No issues with the HVAC and the a/c was blowing so cold on max, with the front and rear units at their slowest fan speed settings that we had to blend in some heat.

    Electrical Gremlin

This is really no big deal. You've simply popped a fuse. Look at the fuse that powers the horn and cig lighter, it's blown.

    stereo options

I went OEM with a CD/graphic equalizer unit out of a Buick. It was plug-n-play, and suits my "factory" look.

    SBC going through thermostats...??

Rule No. 1: Always confirm the customer's complaint So this case; a) What was done to confirm the engine was overheating? b) What's been done to confirm the thermostats are all bad? Testing coolant temp with a calibrated thermometer is the best way to know if an engine is hot. An infrared...

    Seat sagging

I would visit your local wrecking yard, buy a seat from a similar truck, harvest what you need, and rebuild yours. Or put your upholstery onto the good frame from the wrecking yard.

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

That's how my control head is set up. The fan is off when the mode lever is in the "off" position, otherwise, the fan runs on low in all of the modes as its default speed. Drove it around running errands this afternoon and ran the front and back blowers on high speed with no a/c, and then...

    89S's Overhead Console Install Thread

Mine came with the ceiling console. Like it alot, just for the cool aimable map lights for the front and middle row seats. Use them often, especially on long trips where passengers want to read, or sit and chat, and not be in the dark. Very airliner-like. Would like something similar for the...

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

That's a good point, and I don't know the answer. The blower on the firewall has a relay, but I'm not sure about the rear w/o looking at the wiring diagram. Maybe the blower gets the brass disk (the disk that has the 3 springs pushing down on the 3 contact points) so hot that when the rotory...

    did you know?

Black and white news paper and glass cleaner does a great job on glass. The carbon in the black ink is the key I think. They have carbon tipped lens cleaners for expensive camera lenses too. Haven't tried the potato idea, very cool. How about wiping the inside of the windshield with a...

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

After seeing the wiring diagram, and discovering that the compressor is powered directly through the rotary switch, I'm going to install a Bosch relay to power the compressor. The 'burb isn't a daily driver, it's our tower/hauler and people mover, so we're typically out on the road for hours a...

    air conditioner probs?

Fire the engine up, turn the a/c to max, roll the windows down, open the hood, and watch what the compressor is doing. If it runs for a few seconds and shuts off, and then turns back on again, it's probably low on freon. If it keeps running, and you still note that the air blowing out of the...

    towing

If you're not set on a Travel Trailer (TT) I'd highly recommend a pop-up tent trailer. They're a lot more open feeling, and a lot bigger, tow nice because they're low, and don't suck down the power or fuel mileage. A big one, with an 11' or 12' box, will open to 23'-24', with 360 degree views...

Smoke from the a/c heater controls

Thanks for doing that. Hope it helps others. I remember my brother and one of his friends having blower ground wire issues with their K5 Blazers, so when problems first started, I went there first. Probably the damage was already done though. EDIT: Took it out on the freeway for about 30min...

Inner Cab Heater/AC Housing Reference Pics

Thought I'd post a little write up on an issue I've been having for about a year now. About 18mos ago we were on a long trip to and from Sacramento, towing the popup camper in the heat. Basically 5hrs each way, in 90+ temps, with the front and rear a/c running. Wound up with melted wiring...
