    Manual Torque Convertor Lock-up 700r4

How 'bout shooting the trans pan with an infrared temp gun and seeing what your real trans temps are when towing in town, and then decide if you have a problem that needs to be addressed. I'd pop an 11x11x1.5" Tru-Cool (same as B&M Super Cooler) on it before I'd play with how TCC works.

    Transmission?

I would still have the TV cable set by a pro, using a pressure gauge in the transmission. Read about why at bowtieoverdrives.com A poorly adjusted TV cable IS the death of the 700R4, whether it's shifting "good" right now or not.

    Transmission?

Hahaaa.....another great "quick lube" story. There are a billion of them. One of my personal favorites is all the stripped out drain plugs we used to see. It got to be comical. I once needed an expandable drain plug for an emergency case, went to buy one at the big local NAPA and they tell...

    Newbie needing some help.

If it helps with your choices, I tow with 3.42's, in the crazy steep mountains. I'm running the stock 15's and the engine twists at 1,600ish rpm at 55mph in Over Drive. About 300ish more than that in 3rd with the converter locked up, and maybe another 150-200 in 3rd w/ the converter unlocked...

    Help me diagnose trans/clutch issue.

Agreed. The flywheel and/or pressure plate will get hot spots on it from being overheated by a slipping clutch....generally that's caused by drivers who rest their foot on the clutch pedal all the time, but there are other causes. Anyway, these hot spots are uneven "blotches" which cause the...

    Transmission?

^^That's exactly what I'm talking about^^ Regarding Jiffy Lube, it's amazing to me that the chain is still in business with the stories heard everywhere, investigations like the one by KTLA Channel 4 in Los Angeles, and all the money they pay out in damaged vehicles. I was working for a local...

    Transmission?

I'm still not a lover of the flush, even on something that was purchased new. Reason is because on the typical flush job, the pan is not removed and the filter not replaced. And even if it was done with a pan/filter job, I'm still not a fan of stirring up all that "debris" and betting that...

    Transmission?

IMO, you never want to do flushes on engine or automatic transmission. All the flush does is dislodge and stir up all the shavings, grit, crud, and other foreign matter that is a fairly normal byproduct of engines and transmissions. This stuff is normally packed into corners and other areas...

    Recommend a distributor

The wife loves it. It'd be her DD if fuel wasn't $4-$5/gallon all these years. It's always been very reliable, but ever-present in my mind is the fact that the original 5.7 has 286k on it now, and of course, the survival of the 700R4. Most of what it does is either long distance road trips...

    Recommend a distributor

The one I ordered from the local AC-Delco supplier wound up showing up today, so it's installed. Hopefully the ICM was the issue and I can go back to trusting the 'burb as being bulletproof and 110% reliable, which is what it's always been.

    Recommend a distributor

I see I can purchase the AC-Delco ICM by itself, at SummitRacing, for $72http://www.summitracing.com/parts/acf-19179578/overview/make/chevrolet/year/1990/model/v1500-suburban Not sure what my original ICM's number was, and it's long gone. I appears this AC-Delco unit substitutes for quite a...

    Recommend a distributor

About 18mos ago I installed an Edelbrock TBI intake manifold. I'd previously had a problem with the original distributor "chirping/squeaking" and rust around the base of the rotor, etc. I'd pumped some Triflow into it, and that seemed to take care of that issue, but the engine had always had a...

350 TBI Engine Oil Cooler Diverter Seals R & R

Yeah, that's about all we use it for ....... although it's currently doing DD duty for the wife, while I replace headgaskets, radiator, and t-stat in her '95 Audi A6 Quattro Avant. So, yes: Biggest oil filter I can fit, the big trans pan with a mechanical temp gauge, the finned ally diff cover...

    "The Big 3 Upgrade"

Excellent write up. Did this upgrade about 2 years ago because while towing the pop-up camper with it's fridge in 12v mode, it's battery getting some charge, both a/c units running and sometimes having sections of road that require daytime headlights, I was seeing voltage down in the 11-12...

350 TBI Engine Oil Cooler Diverter Seals R & R

Excellent write up. In case you're interested, NAPA sells a much taller filter in their industrial line. Been using one for a year or more now. And if you tow alot, B&M makes a nice finned cast aluminum trans pan that holds an exra 3.5qts. It's bunged for a mechanical temp gauge so you can...

improve your ac in 20 minutes

Pretty sweet little mod then, especially for a us cavernous Suburban owners. Although since fixing my melted HVAC switch, relaying the a/c clutch, and fixing the ground to the blower, it gets almost too cold in there with the front and rear a/c units just on low speed.

    What radios fit

I put the Delco CD player with graphic EQ in mine. Fits perfect, looks bone stock.

improve your ac in 20 minutes

Are you sure it's the blower that made the improvement, or could it have been that you improved the motor ground connection, which is a common failure area for these motors? Just asking, not trying to stir the pot. Love the VDO decal, to make you think you're getting quality German parts, and...

    Electric Fans

Great thread! Liking the big dual fan setup. Wish someone would tow in the mountains and heat so I can see how it'll work under those load conditions. A couple years ago I found the aux 454 fan at the swapmeet for $2. Installed it in front of the 11x11x1.5" TruCool (aka; B&M Super Cooler)...

    Timing Changes?

Two questions: - What's code 42, and if you don't disco the battery after making an adjustment, will there be a problem? -Is there any harm in advancing the timing slightly off zero, so that it's running a little more advance? As long as it doesn't ping under load...on long grades, etc......or...

    pulling to the right!

When you're done chasing brake hoses, and caliper function, take a look at the bushings at the fronts of the main leaf springs. When these go bad, the truck "falls" toward the bad side. Replacement bushings are available. There are rear bushings, and these should be inspected as well.

Thinking more about vortec heads, intake and cam for TBI - need input

Good tip on the tire size and gear ratio. I've left mine stock with the 15's, and 3.42's, and it tows nicely.

    replaced heads/intake wont start

Don't do any mechanical work until you verify spark. Always work from the simple toward the complex. Re-check your distributor timing while you wait for a helper. Once you have made certain that the crank, the cam, and the distributor rotor are at TDC for #1....none of this "I think"...

    replaced heads/intake wont start

Remove any of the spark plugs, put it back into the plug wire that was attached to it, and then rest the plug's metal body on a bare metal piece of the engine. If you have a helper, have them crank the engine over while you watch the plug. It should spark. If it doesn't, and you're sure you...

    Rough running when cold

Coastal CA. We haul 5hrs to get up into the Sierra's and Kings Canyon National Park on HWY 180. I've made a few mods to help the 'burb make this, and other hot hauls: -Transmission is rebuilt with all the latest/greatest upgrade components, a mild shift kit, the big B&M finned aluminum pan...
