    Knocking under load/hard acceleration

Knocking under load is probably a rod. If it was spark knock (pinging) you would hear more of a rapid rattling.

    Lower Radiator Hose Clamp stripped...

Hey, glad to hear it's all fixed up and the nice thing about doing repairs like this is that you won't be revisiting them again in a looooooong time. Just for the record, you could probably rebuild that entire rig from the ground up, and still not touch the price of a new one, especially when...

    sway bars

Here's how I installed the rear bar. I wonder if it's less effective at controlling body roll, with it mounted in front of the axle tube?

Coolant overflow doesn't drain back to rad.

Yes, this is how they are designed to work. @jux, glad you got it. I figured it was the cap since you said there were no leaks.

Coolant overflow doesn't drain back to rad.

It wouldn't matter if the reservoir was cracked. The res is open to the air. It's the radiator and entire cooling system that has to be air tight in order for a vacuum to be formed as the coolant physically contracts. I believe a coolant recovery cap will have a rubber gasket up under the...

Coolant overflow doesn't drain back to rad.

The replacement cap may be the wrong version, or defective. Or the flange on the radiator is bent or damaged, preventing an air tight seal. Or, there's a leak in the system somewhere, so the radiator sucks air in through that leak area, rather than sucking on the coolant reserve tank. You...

    I moved to southern California.

700r4 revs too high before shifting.

Sorry, just now seeing this. Yes, the guage reaches up into the engine compartment. The TV is set so that there is an instant increase in pressure, with any movement of the throttle plate. To the OP: Good decision to get that modified and rebuilt.

Blown rear end in 86 K5 Blazer

I too suggest pulling the cover and seeing what happened. Good time to buy a new ring and pinion, maybe replace the OE limited slip (if it's got one) with a better unit, and inspect/replace the axle bearings, seals, and inspect the axles where the bearing chew....er, I mean, run.

    Lower Radiator Hose Clamp stripped...

    a) Quality hoses aren't going to just rupture, hence why you replace them as a set/system, and buy quality hoses. b) The aviation form-a-gasket is non-hardening. When it's time to change a hose, you just loosen the clamp, give a little twist, and pull. At the most, you might have to run a...

What have you done to your square lately??

Regarding the poor defrost performance. If your truck has a/c, the a/c should come on in the defrost mode in order to dry the air, and instantly remove the moisture from inside the glass. If you don't have a/c, or it's not charged, or not working, your defrost performance will lag waaaaaaay...

    sway bars

I'm running the factory monster on the front, and an equally huge aftermarket version on the rear, but I don't know who built it. Scored it at a wrecking yard off another square 'burb along with it's bigger sets of rear springs and an axle truss off a P/u.

    Lower Radiator Hose Clamp stripped...

Yep. Serious as a heart attack. Been doing it for decades. It also acts like a lubricant when you first slide the hoses on, so in situations where the hoses can be tough to get on, this makes 'em glide right on.

What have you done to your square lately??

Did you see the thread from a month or 2 ago where a member discovered that the heater blower motor from the next generation after the squares, fits the squares, and moves more air? Maybe yours would benefit?

    Lower Radiator Hose Clamp stripped...

Riddle me this. -Why did you strip out another hose clamp? -Why didn't you just immediately install a new hose clamp? -Why would you be driving it around leaking coolant? Not trying to bust your balls, but c'mon man. Fix it right the first time and get on with your life! Do yourself a...

    Monster Trans.

IMO, a bad 700R4 is a blessing. With all the updated parts available, you can now build a pretty fantastic overdrive automatic. I'd suggest you look at all 3 websites before you make the final decision. I'd also recommend having the strongest version built. It only amounts to a few hundred...

    Selling my Vega GT wagon

I really think you should take the 5min and put that on ebay. CL is a waste of time for something like this. You need maximum exposure to nation-wide enthusiasts. I sometimes wonder if the Vega isn't now THE rarest car in US automotive history. I live where everything is well preserved by...

    Monster Trans.

Don't have any info on them. You might also look at www.bowtieoverdrives.com and Raptor. Both are pretty huge online. When my original 700R4 failed at 235k, I used the info on the Raptor site to shop for the heavy duty parts and then had a local GM trained trans tech build mine. I put all...

    Selling my Vega GT wagon

That is soooooo killer! We had a '75 "Spirit Of America" package coupe. Purchased it brand new. White with white GT seats and bright red carpets. 4 on the floor with the GT dash and wheels. I don't think it made it to 30,000mi before it was oil fouling one plug so bad that it rarely ran...

What have you done to your square lately??

My guess would be that you have broken wiring inside one or more of the rubber boots that span between the door and the body. Very common failure in some of the German stuff I used to work on. Not sure if it's common to Squares, but it'd be the first place I'd look if it was mine. The rear...
