    Rpo G86 locking differential

G80 was the Eaton gov lock G86 was limited slip on automobile chassis like the F-Bodies. Prolly the same on the light trucks. G87 ? I need to look at the 85-91 parts books...

    What am I looking at?

If you look in the 85 & 86 light truck wiring diagrams and service manuals you'll find reference to CLCC. I used the definition GM gave that acronym in the service docs. I've heard it called Closed Loop Carburetor Control too along with C3 & C4. These were the very earliest embryonic GM...

    What am I looking at?

Some of the Pre-87 Cali emissions had an O2 and MAP sensor on the CLCC Closed Loop Computer Control ECM for the electronic Rochester... The ESC was built into the Cali CLCC ECM. You'll find the Metripack 280 ALDL jack on these rigs.

    tilt column

The wiper and dimmer really aren't that exciting to swap over to the column... or you can just leave em as is. The Pak Con harmonica plug for the turn signals is the same from 1978 on. It will plug right in. Not sure about the ignition switch but it's on the outside of the column. You can...

    Mechanical fuel pumps

The originals are usually so rusty it's not difficult to tell them from the new ones. If you get a decent set the spring pairs are different bright colors so you can tell em apart. I always use a nasty beat up commercial baking sheet with the tall edges and a stained beat up terrycloth dish...

    Mechanical fuel pumps

Big cap HEI aren't difficult to rebuild. All of the electric parts are available from AC Delco... the mechanicals can be had aftermarket and that's mostly just springs and plastic bushings. Some folks have had good luck with the Skipwhite units... I'd just re-work the GM unit. The biggest...

    Mechanical fuel pumps

I'm a fan of the Q-Jets. Not a performance carb but they've been dead reliable for me on a range of engines including a couple Chryslers that I still own. I have one on a 78 G20 van, 1969 Dodge Polara 383, and I'll be installing one on a 383 in a 1966 Dodge W200 4x4 pickup. The Rochester...

    05 Impala Coolant Issue

Now what to do with it... Is it worth it to keep it around as an OMG We need a car right now and "Winter? HAH!" rig? No payments... a spare is a good thing to have sometimes.

What's the most dangerous tool in your shop?

Short glued leather belts don't disintegrate like vee belts or even serpentine belts. I doubt i's going to fly off. Before I repaired the Turner drive the output pulley was skewed to one side and the belt walked off the end at speed. It just fell down. Luckily it didn't get into the chuck...

    Dana 60 front axle toasted.

The 4.10 gears are still pretty steep for the AMG Detroit 6.xL diesels. I put 3.73 gears in my 76 and my 2000 came with them. They both tow just fine with the 6.5L diesel engines and NV4500 transmissions. Would I do the NV4500 in the 76 again? Heck no. Gear Vendors is the less expensive...

    Distributor rebuild or replace?

No problem Added the GM part numbers for the thrust washers between the gear and the cast housing... Added the GM roll pin part number.

    Fuel tank selector valve

The return line keeps your fuel system from vapor locking. If you were on the coast I'd say you could get away with it. Gilchrist is on the arid side of the mountains. I know Bend gets more than a little warm in the summer and you aren't far from there. You can swap to the 81-91 motorized...

    New temperature gauge reading low

My guess is the sender you need is the 8993164... as long as you still have a 1985 temp gauge and the part didn't change after 1984... Look it up in the 85-91 parts books to be sure. I scanned my squarebody 73-86 CK & 87-91 RV and the 88-93 T400 CK light truck parts and illustration books...

    05 Impala Coolant Issue

If a leaking intake manifold gasket is letting air into the cooling system it'll boil where the coolant and air meet. The 3.1 & 3.4 are notorious for leaking intakes and it's not dexcool it's the intake gaskets. This would fit the symptoms except for the fact that it's holding 20psi.

    05 Impala Coolant Issue

Strange it's not giving you a pulsation on the cooling system test gauge given the other symptoms. Barfing gobs of coolant out the radiator fill neck as soon as you start it up sounds like a cracked combustion chamber casting (block or head) or leaking head gasket. Did you run an old fashioned...

    New temperature gauge reading low

You don't want to use the intake manifold for an engine temp sender. If your coolant gets slightly low the temp sender will incorrectly report a low temp. The RH cylinder head has a bung where the temp sender is on the LH cylinder head where you can put an aftermarket gauge sender. GM used at...

    05 Impala Coolant Issue

The 3.1L & 3.4L have a cooling system that makes em trap and hold onto air. The LS4 5.3L V8 and the 3.5L 3.6L & 3.9L V6 aren't much better. You need to bleed her out.

    Tach cluster issues

The GM tach filters are not complex. Resistors and an electrolytic capacitor. Forty five years is a long lifespan for electrolytic capacitors. GM likely they used carbon resistors too because they're cheap... those don't last any longer than the electrolytics. The 1983 wiring diagrams have...

    A/C question

Making the warranty valid on a replacement compressor depends on the install of a new dryer and the correct system oil charge being installed. The accumulator dryer will have an unknown quantity of the system oil that's not in the compressor. The new one will not have any oil. This oil...

Wiper delay not working right, works on low and high

    Cool. Let me know.
  22. hatzie

    A/C question

There are three problems with that approach; The dryer desiccant is likely loaded with moisture. There's still a mix of moisture laden Mineral and Ester oil insulating the condenser and evaporator, intermittently blocking the orifice valve, and slugging the compressor. The first two are just...

    A/C question

Too much oil will coat the evaporator and condenser and cut down on your thermal transfer. Sounds like that's what you have there. You really should flush the system to get rid of the chunks of old failed compressors and clear out the old mixture of R12 & R134a oil... then you should replace...

    05 Impala Coolant Issue

If you don't see pulses on the gauge with the engine running you have an old-fashioned overheat issue. These V6 engines heat up pretty quickly. If it's a garden variety overheat problem I'd check that the water pump still has an impeller and not just a stub where the impeller fins used to be...

Wiper delay not working right, works on low and high

The dimmer is a bit easier than the wiper or turnsignal switch. It's not buried in the column. The dimmer is mounted on the outside of the column and run by a rod similar to the ignition switch. These are 1970's & 80's electronics so the delay boards are likely through hole discrete components...
