    Cab lights

They specifically specified them as a delete. No other clearance lights you'd normally find on a box truck or a 1 ton truck either. Even switched off they can reflect light from things like flares on parachutes and give you away to the enemy. The CUCV wiring system is quite different in...

    Delcotron 12si Alternator Question

The 10SI fan may fit but it won't move enough air to cool the 12SI. I've seen re-man 12SI units with bent/warped fans.

    How to Weld

It's a skill like any other. You'll need to practice. Doesn't matter how old you are just how interested you are in learning. Community colleges used to have welding classes.

    How to Weld

I started with oxy/acetylene (GAS) under my grandfather's watchful eye. The control and two hand coordination I learned from GAS welding made learning TIG, later in life, a breeze. My TIG welders, that I actually used, have always had foot pedals and High Frequency arc start so heat control...

    Local oil pressure gauge?

Tee into the port behind the intake manifold. It's 1/8" NPT. You can get brass 1/8" NPT fittings from the Hillman drawers at a real hardware store.

    Transfer case trouble or transmission

    I think you're correct that it's not just the diesels but I'll need to consult the parts books. ***EDIT*** Diesels got the optional M40 trans for all years. 1987 1/2, 3/4, & 1 ton 5.0L, 5.7L, 7.4L & Diesel 1988 3/4 & 1 ton 5.7L, Diesel, & 7.4L 1989 3/4 & 1 ton 5.7L, Diesel, & 7.4L 1990 3/4 & 1...

Any good hacks/upgrades you've come up with for our trucks

The rigidity of the vertical milling machine and the way you clamp it to the table is what keeps the hole saw from wandering and making a mess of the hole. A handheld drill or even a drill-press wouldn't give the same clean results.

Any good hacks/upgrades you've come up with for our trucks

Why not use a fold-down license plate with the filler behind like a lot of 60's-90's cars? Relocating the tank from the cab to the rear is a popular mod on the 72 and prior Chevy/GMC pickups. This is hot rodding. Mixing Ford, GM, and Chrysler products is allowed. I've even seen European and...

Any good hacks/upgrades you've come up with for our trucks

Google CUCV Blackout Lights. Lots of hits on Steel Soldiers in the CUCV sub-forum. The CUCV trucks do indeed have blackout capabilities. The military has used blackout lights since WW II. This M1028 has the Blackout bulb in the LH side of the grille and all four corner lights in the bumpers...

Any good hacks/upgrades you've come up with for our trucks

The 12SI is older tech and pretty much maxes out the capabilities of the V-Belt accessory drives at right around 100Amps. Even with two V-Belts on the alternator you can run into trouble driving a really high amp SI series alternator. The cooling fan isn't on par with the newer CS and AD...

Any good hacks/upgrades you've come up with for our trucks

I like the engine bay start ability. Just like a transit coach. My diesel would be a bit more involved. LOL I may do it with a key switch. Heat is what blows out fuses. Soldering the ring terminals onto a fuse will change it's current handling ability. The blowout characteristics of Fuses...

    Backup lights

A NEW Standard Motor Products LS202 or AC Delco 14014559 backup lamp switch for the SM465 with a Weatherpak shroud connection is around $10-$15. If it's missing or damaged... The extension pigtail that runs from the transmission switch to the backup lamp connection at the base of the steering...

    Temperature gauge questions

The 87 sender makes the dash gauge match the aftermarket unit reasonably well. You don't have a 1979 & earlier truck so the Nailhead sender isn't an issue for you. I'd call that a win and not worry about it.

    Patch panel welding

If the coating isn't flaking off... Put em on a cookie sheet in an oven for 24 hours at 250°F. I've soaked 6010 & 6011 in water to use as high amp cutting rods when I was younger and ran out of gas. Worked great for rendering the two ex cop cars we bought from the state for parts too.

    Temperature gauge questions

Those temps look right where you want them to be. You want the engine to run above the boiling point of straight H2O to boil off any condensation and blowby water along with any light petroleum aromatics from blowby in the crankcase and blow it out through the PCV system. The engine efficiency...

    Patch panel welding

If you're feeling especially adventurous there are some dangerous DIY welder projects out there. A friend of mine, Bill The Arcstarter, used a farm welder as a scratch start TIG in the mid 1990's. I did the same with my Forney. That wasn't very satisfying so he built a foot pedal control to...

    Patch panel welding

TIG is much easier to learn when you started welding with Oxy Acetylene. The pedal controlled instant changes in heat without changing gas tips is a darn nice feature of TIG.

    Patch panel welding

The bigger Eastwood MIG welder is Asian made and still runs near the price of a new Lincoln. Never having used one I can't speak to the quality but Eastwood tends to sell decent tools. If you're looking at Asian machines you might want to take a look at Everlast. Their MIG units have a...

    Power Window Motor Repair

Fluid film is a "wet" lube. You don't want wet lubes because they collect dirt. You can apply Graphite or dry silicone to lube the flocking in window guides. Graphite can stain anything that contacts it. Silicone can cause paint issues.

I think He's talking about one of these good old fashioned AC FARM Welders... The Copper and Iron multi-tap transformer Forney C-5 is a heckuva nice smooth AC SMAW farm welder. I have one. Not one of these modern inverter boxes...

    Patch panel welding

Stick on sheet metal is miserable to do even on DC and you want a smaller size SMAW (Stick) power supply to handle the lower amperage in a stable fashion. You'd be better off to buy an air cooled TIG torch and attach it to your SMAW welder box with the Argon gas on a valve as a scratch start...

    Power Window Motor Repair

No worries. If I had kids riding in this thing I'd put a covert "driver only" switch in to shut off the passenger side lock and window controls just like a modern vehicle. No wearing out the antiques.
