School me on 3 speed manuals

The Saginaw 3 speed was not a bad transmission. It put up with the low end launching torque of the 292 I6. The column shift isn't that difficult to deal with. You will need rod bushings. The rod bushings on the column levers are the same ones GM used on some of the automagic shift rods and...

    Fuel Sending Unit

There's supposed to be a "reserve" of something like 2-3 gallons after the gauge reads empty. Sounds like the old sender was worn out. You can change your Empty point in the 16 gallon tank by VERY slightly bending the float arm. I would put 4 gallons in the tank and set the arm so it has around...

    Fuel Sending Unit

So you tried it on both sides. It's probably the senders. You can test the senders out of the tanks. The top of the sender needs to be grounded to the frame (the blue wire in Jerrys' last picture) and the sender wire plugged in. With the ignition on move the float through its' travel and see...

    Fuel Sending Unit

The bypass valve is already eliminated. The gauge goes to E with the selected sender plugged in and 3:00 unplugged. If any of the wiring was shorted it wouldn't go to 3:00 with the sender unplugged. If the wiring were open it wouldn't go to E with the sender plugged in.

4,000 RPM shifts and floating the valves at 6,300 RPM on a regular basis is gonna be rough on the innards of any V8 engine. Big blocks really really don't like higher RPMs. I spat the rods out of several Oldsmobile and Pontiac 455 engines when I was a teenager. I loved the Caddy 472 & 500...

    Can you tell / decode

I've had three 307 motors in pickup trucks. They all did just fine. If you don't drive em like you stole em they last a long long long time. The 350 & 400 small blocks won't last if you run em hard. I replaced a spent 305 in an '86 with one out of a '70 Chevelle. Free truck and Free motor...

I have to agree. If it was original to an A-Body then it's a 307. You can check the crankshaft casting number as well but the block number should tell the tale fairly well.

I would be willing to bet it's a 1970 307 someone was trying to pass off as a 350... The 307 is a 283 with a 327 crank. Shorter stroke and larger bore than a 305. Not a bad motor actually. It has a fair amount of low end torque making it a pretty decent small V8 truck engine. What's the...

    Favorite tool brand?

I have a lot of older Craftsman tools. Stanley bought Craftsman last March so I fear Honkey Kong Jr is right... they will soon be made of Chinesium or are right now. Husky is owned by Home Depot. Rumor is they are made by APEX. Kobalt are made by Williams for Lowes. Most if not all of them...

Switching from dual to single tank... How do I fix the wiring?

Here's a How-To on removing Packard 56 terminals. This one includes Pak Con terminals like GM used in the fuse panels and wiper motors as well... This guy is using screwdrivers like you can easily find at Sears, ACE, or the Borg box stores. There's no need to cut up donor vehicle harnesses...

Switching from dual to single tank... How do I fix the wiring?

If you have the 84 donor why not swap the entire NL2 dual tank harness over. You'll be able to use the 6-port 81-91 motorized Pollack valve, that you can still buy, instead of the obsolete and unavailable 73-80 6-port solenoid valve. The 84 will have several easy disconnect points. Don't cut...

    Fuel Sending Unit

It means that gauge wiring to that tank is perfectly fine. The sender has a problem. It's either jammed at the bottom of the tank or the wire wound resistor element is shorted to the sender body on both ends. Why is that? The GM fuel gauge reads E when the sender resistance is 0Ω (a dead...

    Fuel Sending Unit

Pinned at E means there's a dead short to ground somewhere between the tank ground and the gauge. It's either the wiring or the senders. Does the gauge needle swing to 3:00 when you remove the wire from the selected sender?

    diesel trucks

The only 350 Olds Diesels I've seen were long bed 1/2 ton trucks. I put a good running 350DX from an 85 Delta 88 in an 85 C10 Shorty with a Borg Warner T5. Didn't get 30mpg like some wild claims... More like 21-23 HWY and 17-19 around town. About the same as my 2000 C2500 6.5L Turbodiesel...

Both are good looking cars. Shows how well I know my 60's Fords. A family friend had two slick looking mid 60's Ford wagons that caught fire on separate occasions... Probably 65 Galaxies but not completely sure. Boxy with stacked four headlamp setups like the 65 Tempest/GTO and nearly flat...

The Galaxy is not a bad looking rig. I kinda like the 1972 F250 Highboy and the 1966 Dodge W200 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks. Nowhere near the inexpensive simplicity of the GM squares.

There's gotta be more to the story. Something else pissed him off. My IP says I'm in whatever state I happen to be working and even here at home it shows Maine, VT, NH, MA, and even NY, CT, or RI sometimes. I listed my location as Cincinnati, OH a long time ago and only recently updated it...
