What have you done to your square lately??

I agree with @JamesSam that the color is killer. I love a nice green.

Press-in rocker arm studs migrating up.

Man that’s awesome! Have any old photos laying around?

What have you done to your square lately??

Oil change day, and I got the deeper offset Halibrands on the front. I had no idea that just a little more dish would make such a difference!

Thanks! Carry on, all. Probably been that way the whole time. I’ll update here if anything changes

@idahovette did you lose a bunch of them or just one?

Press-in rocker arm studs migrating up.

Bill, here’s some pics, I didn’t want to continue without them, descriptions sometimes don’t tell a story. This one is the most obvious. Compared with this- Hard to grab on a camera phone, I know. Here’s a picture of the base of the stud on the one with most threads showing. So it may be the...

Press-in rocker arm studs migrating up.

I posted on “what have you done lately “ thread, but thought I’d start a legit thread here. When replacing the valve seals (mid 70s 350, 461 camel hump heads, roller tip rockers, unknown cam with lumpy idle) I noticed some studs with more thread showing above the nuts. I took two rockers off...

Thoughts on how to recover from a slightly cross threaded spark plug threads in head?

It’s just how my brain works, but my first thought was “of course it had to be #8! It just couldn’t be #1 or 2”. But, it is what it is. Looking forward to seeing how this comes out- keep us in the loop.

What have you done to your square lately??

Thanks for your response man! But, the thing is, I don’t have screw in studs, I just have old school press-in that stock SBCs have. This looks like it’s a thread repair kit? Or is it something for cutting in NEW threads? Either way that’s pretty cool.

What have you done to your square lately??

Looks like I’m going into long hibernation mode until I can figure out what my next plan is. I happened to notice a couple rocker arm studs that had more threads showing than the others, so I took it back apart for some sampling. I picked one rocker that was appropriate with all the others, then...

Sorry for your loss- that’s never easy.

What have you done to your square lately??

Got ‘er back together tonight with the mixture of umbrella seals and positive locks on the valve guides. Let’s give ‘er a couple hundred miles and see what the fresh spark plugs look like. Re-lashed the valves while I was at it.

    Column Gear Shift Detent

This is interesting- I thought the detents themselves came from the transmission? And that would just need an indicator for the transmission extra gear? Just going by what I saw in my 350 trans when I did the Transgo shift kit, I’m definitely not a guru.

What have you done to your square lately??

IMHO, man, you’ve been battling this thing for a while now. It’s likely going to get worse at some point, I’d just be done with it and replace it, but that’s just how I roll. You do you.

What have you done to your square lately??

Got to work on the valve seals. Then I discovered that for whatever reason (probably because they decided to stick with just o-rings on the exhaust valves) they didn’t machine down all of the valve seats for press-on seals. I could measure, but it wouldn’t make a difference. Some slid on, now...

    Hello from Flint

Oh, sorry- missed that last sentence. I read LS6 and got all googly eyed, haha. There’s a lot of options as you know. It doesn’t appear that the ubiquitous LS swap has taken over on this website, but there are some. When it comes time, ask away, you’ll get lots of input. What year did you head...

    Hello from Flint

Welcome from a fellow Michigander- my dad hauled cars for Bouthell/Ryder out of Flint. We lived in Atlas, just outside Goodrich before my parents divorced and my mom moved us to Waterford/Pontiac area. LS6 eh? Sweet! LS version or OG big block?

What have you done to your square lately??

If it works it works! I remember my dad doing somersaults and backflips to put a tilt column in his non-tilt ‘74 GMC. As I recall, he got a hot tip that a shop manual from a 70s Buick was the trick to figure it out. Not sure why that was but I think there was some crossover between GMC and...

    Collapsed upper radiator hose

Like that idea. I think @Ricko1966 had recommended putting an aspirin or Tylenol tablet in the thermostat to prop it open for complete circulation before it dissolves and goes away. I haven’t tried it but sounds like a neat trick.

All of your posts make me either feel thankful that I don’t have any symptoms from my steering column yet, or fearful for when it does.

    2001 Silverado advice

I was gonna say, I’d love to have a 2wd SWB in that year- my dad had one but it rusted away from the Michigan salt. That’s one of my favorite body styles in the “newer” trucks and it would be my pick- I never got along well with the Cat-eye years. But they are definitely going up in value. So...

I need to do that too, maybe this winter. What did you have in mind for a block off plate for the firewall? I think there’s a few options out there- I know LS Fabrication makes one.

The rain will return shortly, getting in the morning cruises when I can- will be going back to garage/project mode soon.
