Want to build a good horsepower, good fuel economy engine for a 1978 c20 with stock 350. I don't know much and need help.

The cylinder head number is cast in the area by the valve springs- you’ll need to remove the valve covers to see them, but they may be hidden under some sludge depending on how clean your engine is. As far as the block goes, you can find that in the driver side rear of the block cast into the...

Want to build a good horsepower, good fuel economy engine for a 1978 c20 with stock 350. I don't know much and need help.

In case someone hasn’t already covered this- smaller combustion chambers increase your compression ratio. More or less, the compression ratio is the ratio of the area inside the cylinder itself compared to the combustion chamber. That’s where you get a number, for example, of 8.5 to 1. That can...

    Duh, I meant Cyclone sidepipes.

Man that brings me back. My dad put Cyclone headers on EVERYTHING back in the day. Even his CJ-5, lol.

    What a mess Edelbrock cleaning

Those things are ruthlessly easy to lose. I’ve taken to removing them with a fine pair of needlenose pliers very carefully and having a magnetic parts holder/bowl close by. O’Reillys and Autozone usual have a smattering of Edelbrock stuff laying around, you can check if they have any. Better...

Clearance issues with lowering spindles and what you did about it…

Your Halibrand is what I’d get, especially the gold color. 20s are just too big for my tastes, I’d probably go with 18s. I think a brand does make the rallies in 18, but it’s an obscure brand. Edit- it was Coys. But they only make them in 20” too.

@projectmidnight74 @TotalyHucked I wonder if the wheel offset is wrong, or too far to the outside?

Clearance issues with lowering spindles and what you did about it…

Well, the saga continues. I had lost a wheel weight somewhere along the way, and decided it was probably time to recheck everything, and get away from the stick-on weights. Discount Tire rebalanced them with standard crimp on weights. I immediately saw that now they would start hitting tie...

Proform Harmonic Balancer Cover with timing marks for sale.

They shipped the 8” instead of the regular SBC size and I caught it too late to return. Pay for shipping from NW Washington and it’s yours. Apparently for 400 SBC and big block.

How much oil pressure is to much for a stock 350

    And there ya go. Thanks!

What have you done to your square lately??

Ordered up some header gaskets and headers. I ended up going with some Summit ceramic coated for a Chevelle/passenger car for more clearance. I have a local shop that will custom bend everything I want and are happy to work with whatever I bring in. Looking forward to not sweating when I go over...

How much oil pressure is to much for a stock 350

Thinking of this from the other side, what would happen if the oil pressure was actually too high so as to cause a problem- what’s the first thing that would give? That’s not necessarily a rhetorical question. I would think it would be hardest on the oil pump drive itself. Seals…rear main, oil...

Are rubber valve cover gaskets JUNK? Pic inside

Nice work! After you mentioned that, I got to thinking of my own and maybe I should check that out! After looking at mine with cast thicker valve covers, there’s lots of space in there- methinks perhaps your intake manifold has a lot of overlapping material in that area? No matter though-...

Are rubber valve cover gaskets JUNK? Pic inside

I’ll be the guy that will chime in and say that I really like the Fel Pro steel core rubber gaskets. The biggest change for me though was getting away from using stamped tin/steel covers and going with more rigid cast aluminum covers- it is all I’ll use these days.

What have you done to your square lately??

Today, I’m not working on the truck per se, but shopping. I have headers picked out (I think), and currently am working on a solution for the front rally wheels that are a constant issue with the tubular control arms. About six months later, the stick on weights that was a solution have gone by...

    Jack question

Apologies in advance for a jack question, but I haven’t seen exactly what I’m asking about. 1. What are the differences in stock engine bay jacks throughout the years? I wouldn’t mind finding one for mine, it’s an ‘81. 2. Do they suck that bad? I’m not totally hung up on using only this- far...
