    A/C compressor

The evolution of the compressor names / parts division is kind of convoluted, and Delphi is no longer a wholly owned part of GM. All the Harrison division compressors are labeled Frigidaire from 1955 to the mid to late 70s. The Delco Air label is on the compressors through '82 IIRC. Harrison is...

    A/C compressor

The clutch assemblies can be swapped between serpentine and V-belt clutches on the later, light weight R4s, not the early style like this one; I wanted one of the last Delphi R4 compressors (GM sold the rights, all are now made by Compressor Works of TX, no matter what name is on them) to...

    R4 Compressor Troubles

I've found the sudden body leaks around the perimeter to be very obvious and wet, just like you were looking for. The main shaft seal leaks can be sudden without much to make them obvious, or they can be oily to very oily and seem to hold refrigerant for years too. Even GM said in the shop...

    R4 Compressor Troubles

Unfortunately, a fairly rapid refrigerant loss out the shaft seal or a o-ring body leak on the R4 are all too common. The good news is that the replacement double lip, shaft seal does a better job than the original single lip or ceramic (pre mid '84) seals ever did. I personally think a body...

That looks like a fiber optic cable to light some small item, like a switch or indicator.

"generator" light stays on while engine is running....

Disconnecting the battery in operation is supposed to be a no-no. Damages the alternator with the sudden loss of the battery in an attempt to bring the voltage back up.

"generator" light stays on while engine is running....

This sounds completely inop, not at all like I was expecting

"generator" light stays on while engine is running....

Unfortunately, this is a common type of failure on this series alternator. It cannot charging at its full 63-78 amp rating due to a failure in the rectifier (IIRC). It is still charging, as long at the light isn't on at full brightness when running. You may even see it dim more, or even go out...

    Police Auxiliary Gauge Wiring Question

That sounds correct. IIRC, some of the GM terminal ends (if you have the 9C1 harness) were designed for both the 'spade' style connector and a little cut out to slip over the 'button' style sending unit, so the same harness can be used with or without gauges. I do have a spade style connector...

    Worth it to rebuild A/C?

If you are serious about it and want it to be reliable, buy only a new 'R4' compressor or change over to an aftermarket design, i.e. Sanden (will require custom lines/hoses). Rebuilt R4s don't have a good reputation (they weren't the greatest when they were new either). You will end up spending...

    Security Options for Older Vehicles

It didn't start off as a goal, but I ended up with the GM Content Theft System when I added the key less entry. If you lock the doors with the remote while the door is opened, it has to be unlocked with the remote, or the lights flash and horn sounds...

    Water pump failure destroys radiator

If he is still running the stock CS130 as equipped (IIRC), they are on borrowed time brand new, without electric fans. The performance at idle would be very poor.

    Water pump failure destroys radiator

x3 The fans themselves can come apart with catastrophic results.

    Water pump failure destroys radiator

Definitely added load with the spacer, but not unheard of either with all the junk on the market. Hub fell off a 22 month old pump with 20K miles (I still had the box). Obviously not much of a press fit, you could see a bonding compound on the shaft. 'No load' compared to having a mechanical...

    78 round eye

The water pump rotation changes from '84 to '89 ('V' belt vs. serpentine belt), so keep this in mind if moving things around. No other accessories change rotation direction.

    Catalytic Converter Question

Genrally, the air injected at the manifolds is for open loop operation only (at least the ports upstream from the O2 sensor), primarily for the control of HC and CO after start up. The converter only gets air injection (if so equipped) when the engine is warm. During deceleration, a hot idle, or...

    Catalytic Converter Question

The air injection tube is for three way catalyst, which I don't believe any 49 state squarebodies used (can't say for sure for Cali). The rear bed of 3 way catalyst uses platinum, palladium, and rhodium to break down NOx emissions (besides CO & HC), some applications required more oxygen for the...

no off position on fan control?

This sounds like a non-A/C truck to have floor vents. The A/C and non-A/C trucks of the era run the fan all the time, even in the off position. Lessens the chance of CO poisoning and is a hold over from the 'Astro Ventilation' era, IMHO.

    TH400 bangs into gear

Turbo 400s are known for intermittent excessively harsh engagement into reverse. A Transgo kit lists it as one of the things it fixes. Mine is actually so far on the gentle side the truck has to roll briefly at times (only a couple feet) to 'feel' fully engaged. Prior to the kit, it would...

Default Any inline6 250 experts need some advice

Positively not an integral in the picture, they look so different. The Op's looks just like my '78 292. I would love to change my intake to I could put a TBI system on it. I've been looking at building a programming one, but I have to change the intake. Don't want to go with a Clifford because...

    250ci 6 Cylinder Emissions Questions.

It is a deceleration valve, I assume you have a manual transmission. The differential pressure between ported and non ported vacuum causes it to open upon deceleration, which helps prevent fuel from being pulled from the carburetor causing higher HC & CO emissions. The rest of it (in the valve...

Cruise control arm but no wiper controls

My '81 tilt column had cruise and no wiper control. I believe the wiper control appears around '84, just like the B-body cars. Keep in mind the coupling at the column to the intermediate shaft changes around 80-81 so I had to use the shaft from the '81. Coupled perfectly at the rag joint when...
