    Truck backfires and doesn’t start

What preceded this issue? Ran fine one day. Shut it off and now no restart or something else.

    Oil pump options and questions

Standard pumps work fine. High volume pump as a repair crutches another issue. If 4x4 pan is easy to remove. Roll new main and rod bearings in. Have done that successfully on many customer vehicles. It is a bit of a gamble and messy. Only alternative is yanking the engine for o-haul. A HV pump...

    Q-Jet Block Off Plate

I do like the electric thermostats better if one can be found that unwinds at the correct speed for the application. They are not dependent on a clean intake passage or working heat riser.

    Q-Jet Block Off Plate

That's correct, there is exhaust within a manifold passage, but it never blends with the intake charge unless EGR equipped. Exhaust should never enter those tubes. If present they are broken or rotted out. I have done countless carb conversions and left that plate in the manifold. Like I said...

    Q-Jet Block Off Plate

No, exhaust [for preheat] is on the outside of the tubes never inside. Any tube leak would be an unregulated EGR. However it is possible to have an exhaust leak at the gasket where the tube assembly attaches to the manifold. The 2 tubes that run to the carb can be removed. The vacuum port on...

    Q-Jet Block Off Plate

Unless installing a plate for appearance just leave stock one on and proceed with choke conversion. It is a tube preheated by the exhaust. Will not affect drivability in any way unless rotted out.

    Throttle sticking

If base idle isn't adjusted properly throttle plates can stick. In other words throttle is closed too much causing plates to stick in the bore. Disconnect throttle cable to isolate it from the TBI unit. Check if it still sticks.

    Emissions pipes

Yes, some vehicles had dual bed converters. Not sure if 87's had it. That was an odd emissions time frame with dual air pumps, carbs, some carbs with feedback and TBI. All dependent on GVW and motor option. A vacuum hose manufacturer delight.

New engine installed - need TBI timing/idle help

Have seen that connector under the carpet or near firewall inside floor passenger side. If under hood it is separate and usually easy to find. Not sure of the year have also seen it behind the glove box.

    Header farts

I don't use gaskets on cast manifolds but never tried it on headers, interesting. Might try that in the future.

    Carb at high alt

Carter-Edlebrock metering rods can easily be changed. You will need larger rods. How much reduction in fuel? Someone will come along with the calculation.

    Header farts

Above is an absolute, recheck recheck recheck. Suggest applying a small bead of high temp silicone to both sides of the gasket, let it set up for 15-30 minutes, install. Just snug bolts up and come back the next day and tighten. Also, cheap headers usually do not have a thick enough flange...

    Brakes

Agree with the possible diagnosis. Question replacing the valve unless it has some other obvious issue. Read several posts about new PV's leaking or just plain failing. One failure was on a TV series, leaked. Most of the valves are offshore production.

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

Plugged exhaust? Drive with a vacuum gauge shouldn't go much lower than 4 inches. Alternate method loosen the header pipe slightly. Low fuel pressure?

What’s the solution to this?? Idle adjustor

Would be better to properly diagnose the problem. Really need to know the IAC counts. If you close the throttle plates to fix a cold start issue it could have a sticky throttle or die when warm. The IAC can only adjust so far then other undesirable things will happen. Some possible suspects are...

    Edelbrock accelerator pump

Put the old coil back in and does it have the strap ground? I know people are trying to improve their vehicle, but the quality of parts today is sometimes questionable. On top of that a stock HEI coil can usually produce twice the KV necessary for combustion.

    Pass power window

Assume the question is what's wrong? Need to check power at either the switch or motor whatever is easier first. Then proceed uphill or downhill to the problem. Been repeated here numerous times, new parts are suspect until proven otherwise. Lots of junk out there.

No drill,no ream, DIY Quadrajet throttle bushings

Interesting, Re-bushing like it has always been done isn't hard but at the very least requires a reamer. Can see where that might be a good option for one-time rebuilders.

    Hey...what's the big idea..??

There are several people here than can assist with q jets. Do agree, decent carbs for non-HP applications. They get a bad rap from the lack of knowledge folks. Some of that might be related parts availability.
