Newbie needing help
Does sound like a choke issue. When completely cold does the choke plate close? That is the butterfly on front venturi. Butterfly should be just closed when cold and open slightly after starting. -
A/C but no heat
are heater hoses hot, temperature difference between the 2? Temp split around 20-25 degrees indicates a plugged core, no or low flow. Check after warm and heater has been operating. When coolant was added did you bleed air out? -
Idle Emissions Help
If idle screws all the way in carb has a problem. Can check air pump by pulling hoses, see if air is flowing. Beginning to sound like the carb is gross rich.- fast 99

Thought about Por 15 as well but I think removing it later on for finishing might be a problem. That stuff is like iron when dry. How much of the vehicle is rusty? It might save you a lot of time to prepare it properly now rather than undoing a seal coat. Does anyone in your area do slurry...- fast 99

Fuel pump pressure problem?
Pump has a vent hole in top housing. Fuel there indicates an internal diaphragm failure. Many new defective pumps. ONLY buy Delphi, GM or Delco. Any other brand is hit and miss. Also, good idea to run only ethanol free fuel. Multiple reasons for doing so.- fast 99

Rule of thumb, high CO is rich. high HC is anything other than fuel from engine condition to a misfire. Usually, HC will be low with high CO but not always. I know this sounds clear as mud. Before tossing parts at it why not try diagnosing first? As suggested above check fuel pressure and volume. Ethanol is not friendly to old fuel systems.- fast 99

Yeah, that's possible. Rentals are usually not treated the same as owned. Doesn't GM have issues with torque convertors shedding metal requiring tranny o-hauls? May be that was the problem with it. Idle Mixture Screws Do Not Adjust Anything on 1974 454.
Whatever the reason quality sucks. Bought a cam sensor once for a Hyundai that had an OD was too large to fit in the hole. Don't have to design the part just copy it. What are the actual readings? Another idle suggestion. Many times if the idle is increased to just below the max emissions will clean up, sometimes quite considerably. Thats an option but have to be careful the load doesn't exceed the fast blow fuse. Last I knew they were about $10. After buying several I use the shunts. Picture is from Amazon. But the one I use has only one bar, cheaper. Don't think that really matters. Made leads for the battery. Good idea to use the neg side, won't short to ground. Below is how it's used.- fast 99

As an electrician this might help. I use a shunt with Fluke on the millivolt scale for draws. It allows anything to be turned on or off except starter. Max draw is .05 millivolt across the shunt.- fast 99

As manufacturers consolidated part numbers this became a problem. Either too fast or too slow however the adjustment can help the situation provided it isn't one with an index tab. Best option is a GM stat. Any pick and pull yards nearby?- fast 99

Doesn't matter as long as it is inserted into the circuit. On the starter sticking, it is either a bad starter or electrical such as the ignition switch.- fast 99

Another way is hook a test light in series at the battery post. Preferably on the negative side. If it lights up there's a draw. A common non-fused draw is the alternator, disconnect it.- fast 99

Truck backfires and doesn’t start
Disable the ignition and crank with the starter, does it sound even.? If a cylinder isn't filling properly when the engine rotates a bad cylinder the starter will increase in speed. Kind of a quick and dirty compression test. If uneven the diagnostic procedure takes a different turn.- fast 99
