    Carb Swap?

Scrapped 100's and 100's of vehicles from the mid 70's until early 2000's. If I could remember what they were probably cry for a week. Give you an example of one I remember because sold it to a friend. Was a 65 Chevelle convert about 1976 or 77 $250. Anyway, back the Holley subject. Know GM...

    Carb Swap?

I had never seen a spread bore on a stock GM that's why I asked. If vehicle runs good with it that's great but I wouldn't toss the original Q jet away.

    freshening up my 350 (1986)

Yes, be sure ring groves are completely clear of carbon. If grove tool is unavailable break an old ring, grind the jagged edge flat.

Hope a gas station isn't far away. Are you sure it is original? GM part number stamping?

    Carb Swap?

Q jet design is a good compromise between economy and power. They have idiosyncrasies that anyone experienced can deal with. People dislike them because they don't understand the design. For modified mild performance engines the Carter Edlebrock carb is a good choice. I will take a Q jet...

Why is my fresh rebuild smoking

Not a coolant sommelier. Given the year assume it has regular green. May be that assumption is wrong. To answer the question don't know.

Why is my fresh rebuild smoking

Coolant and tranny fluid both may appear white. Smell's sweet coolant.

Why is my fresh rebuild smoking

Do you mean it smoked on startup and quit or continued to smoke. Is it coolant or oil? Startup smoke [oil] is indicative of valve or guide issues. If automatic check modulator.

    Bolt pattern adapter

Just not a good idea. Our shop will not remove a wheel with any kind of spacer or adapter. As soon as it is touched your liable.

    No brake lights

Check power on brake switch when pedal is depressed and not. If no power head towards the fuse block. If powered other side will go to turn signal switch, then to the rear. Trace the power to signal switch. If power is present, my guess is an open circuit from brake light switch to signal switch...

Keep getting bad alternators??? On #4

Cardone is hit and miss. Some parts there's no other option. Think they quit selling rebuilt carbs but back when they did, I always asked the counter person if they had more than 1 because it usually took a couple to get a usable part. Only bought them when linkage was missing or had broken...

Keep getting bad alternators??? On #4

Have posted this before. After going through 3 new pumps in about 200 miles did a little research. Appears some manufacturers have omitted the return spring on top of the pump arm. First few did not have the spring. Pump arm would stick at about mid travel resulting in next to no fuel volume. AC...

Keep getting bad alternators??? On #4

Haven't had problems with anything that had a Bosch label on it. From sensors to starters to fuel pumps. It's all been good. And I don't like German vehicles.

Keep getting bad alternators??? On #4

I used 2 places in Spokane that were doing reliable electrical repair and testing, both have retired. Seems to be the state of that industry. Not recommending NAPA but most of the stores here can test alternators. Having that many bad alternators in a row leads me to believe something else is...

    Fresh oil

Doesn't happen much today with computer controls but carbed vehicles can have diluted oil from excess fuel. Engine operation may change after a service. Actually, after doing a carb o-haul we needed to do it before sending owner to emissions testing. Could and did fail from dirty/diluted oil alone.

    Fuel mixture screws

Those plugs are hardened. Carb will need to be removed and turned over. Using a small wheel make slots on both sides of the plugs. Only about 1/4" long, 1/8"th deep. Then with a small pin punch break out that piece. Should be able to get behind the plugs and tap them out. One problem doing...

    Ecklers eurathane dash pad?

They are alright, grain, color and overall fit is good. Only issue on one I purchased [same brand] was the left upper corner of gauge bezel. Had to grind material off the bezel was noticeable.

    Brake shoe placement?

DO NOT beat it on. Provide a picture of the brakes. Maybe we can see something wrong. Correct brake drum?

Need a little guidance (suburban floor rail)

Gosh, some areas of the country rust is horrible. Most of the time vehicles in the NW only have that kind of rust if it was imported from another area. We have some problems with it but usually not that bad.

    Brake shoe placement?

Install the hold-down pins then line up shoe with wheel cylinder rod and push it in. There is a light spring behind the cylinder piston, while holding cylinder rod in install brake return spring. Keep in mind self-adjuster arm is under anchor spring on one side. Shown in above picture. It's kind...

Help me out of this rabbit hole ! Lowering, wheels, backspacing, tire sizing - help !

I worked at a tire store. Both of our counter people could tell you exactly what wheel, tire, backspacing and how much lift is needed from memory. What would fit and what wouldn't. Is there a tire store nearby that might help?

SBC 350, want to cruise 70-75 reliably

Any of those options would work. For me it would depend on the available parts, cost, load, percentage of higher speed driving and modifications required. 3.73 is decent ratio but even higher would be desirable for hi way use. Another option not mentioned is a gear vendor overdrive.
