    Thermostat

Do not buy any value brand stat. Either it won't work out of the box, or you'll be changing it within a year.

    Installing Sensors

Teflon tape is fine. I use liquid Teflon must faster and it works. Being a line tech time is money.

Single tank to dual tank FIX!

Second tank wiring alternate suggestion. Run a single wire back to aftermarket switching valve. Tap into gauge wiring behind the cluster, run both sides to a 6-pole changeover dash switch. Provide fused power to other side of switch the changeover valve wire is on. Only problem with this...

Whole A/C system Oil Capacity from R12 to R134A

10oz sounds about right, don't have access to Mitchell right now, may be some can provide that information. Originally should have been a sticker on drier top. New compressor might have that information in the box.

Whole A/C system Oil Capacity from R12 to R134A

Use same amount of oil going from R12 to 134. Using a little more oil is much better than not enough. I have never seen a trashed compressor from excessive oil. Nearly every seized or noisy compressor is dry. Excessive oil can reduce cooling but 2oz won't be noticeable, takes much more than...

    Why does it do this

Does sound choke related. Choke thermostat could be too tight, choke pull-off needing adjustment or fast idle too low. Choke plate should close when cold but not too tightly, after starting pull-off should open plate sightly. Choke thermostat may be indexed and not adjustable. When cold, either...

    Brown timing wire diesafter unplugged

Normally the timing would be set or checked first. Problem your having is you have no idea where the IAC counts are. If they are at either limit the EMC cannot control idle. Really need to try to diagnose rather than tossing more parts at it. Could you imagine paying a shop for this kind of...

Idling high and can’t get it lower

Is the throttle plate tab against idle speed adjustment screw? If not check that the fast idle cam isn't keeping it high. One of 2 things is going on, either air is entering from sources not controlled by carb or throttle plates aren't closed. If your sure throttle plates are closed start...

    Brown timing wire diesafter unplugged

Is the base idle set? Need to have data access to get IAC counts. Anything from a partially stuck open EGR to a vacuum leak could cause that. Computer has the ability to adjust within certain parameters these issues crop up when those capabilities are exceeded.

    Brake pedal loses pressure

Loosing vacuum to booster will cause a no brake or a high and hard pedal like when the engine isn't running. Usually, would not sink to floor. If there are no leaks, then a new master should fix it. If you lightly press and maintain the force on the pedal they will sometimes gradually sink to...

    Muffler

Most muffler shops will be able to advise you. There is still the old glass pack, they worked for decades. Boring I know it's more fun to say Borla.

    Cutting out/dying while driving

Because fuel requirements at idle are much less than under heavy load, think gallons per hour.

    Cutting out/dying while driving

That's why I recommended checking fuel volume. Vehicles with volume or pressure problems can be fine on level ground but if fuel demands increase [such on a hill] they run out after fuel in the lines and bowl are depleted. You need to do some diagnostic testing. Until then it's a poke in the dark.

    Carb Opinion

Q-jets are reasonably easy to rebuild but there are some idiosyncrasies that should be addressed. Not familiar with that book but you will need to do a little research. Use that camera on your cell phone, take pictures during disassembly. Fuel today is not designed for carbs, some adjustment...

    Cutting out/dying while driving

Check fuel pressure and volume. Inside HEI on pickup coil there are 2 small wires, look very closely for damage or wear to the insulation close to the pickup. What happens is the vacuum advance turns the coil plate, opens up the circuit if either of the wires are broken. Can gently pull on...

86 C10 454 popping out exhaust soft and loud at times while in Idle. (WHY) Video inside

Not the seals, actual guide or valve stem wear. Known issue with big blocks. When running valve wobbles in the head, doesn't seal properly. Eliminate everything else first.

86 C10 454 popping out exhaust soft and loud at times while in Idle. (WHY) Video inside

Exhaust leak? power brake, easiest to locate with a stethoscope. O2 can enter if exhaust can escape. Loose exhaust guides can cause that and still maintain even vacuum.

Further VIN questions. all chassis VINs just partials?

How would law enforcement prove ID on a vehicle with missing tags? There should be some procedure to do it or is the vehicle seized and crushed? Obviously, it couldn't be licensed.

Further VIN questions. all chassis VINs just partials?

Not complete usually only includes a prefix letter or 2 and sequential numbers. Having a towing co had to ID vehicles to dispose of them. We contacted the State Patrol. It was very rare that they were unable to fabricate a complete VIN from the partial. Might try local law enforcement or...

    Diagnose 1st Replace parts second

Agree it seems to happen a lot. Vehicle needs basic items checked before tossing parts at it. From years of doing diagnostics, it's rarely one failure. Something as simple as a vacuum advance leaking could cause poor idle, power and fuel economy. Checking vacuum is another missed item. There...

    AC Compressor Belt

Does the narrow belt bottom out in the AC pully? If not, other than appearing wrong it should work. As you say the wider one will fail.

    AC Compressor Belt

7550 will be about 1/2" shorter. Does appear belt is low in that pully but how deep is it in the others? Could just be the clutch/pully design?

    low oil pressure

Has it been checked with a mechanical gauge? That oil pressure is not a death sentence. A rebuilt 350 in one of our company trucks idled at 5-8 warm and 30 at speed. We were using 15-40 oil. I was concerned about it, called the rebuilder they said run it. If it blows up, they will replace it...

Want to build a good horsepower, good fuel economy engine for a 1978 c20 with stock 350. I don't know much and need help.

RV cam is generally designed for lower RPM applications, torque and heavier GVW. They used to make cams for more MPG, unknown if they are still available.

Want to build a good horsepower, good fuel economy engine for a 1978 c20 with stock 350. I don't know much and need help.

If you know the gear ratio and tire diameter RPM can be calculated from that. Unless changed gear ration should be able to be decoded from VIN. Lower cruise RPM higher millage. Higher RPM more power, less millage it's a tradeoff. What millage are you trying to achieve? By today's standards SB...
