    1978 K20 Gas Gauge

99.9% of the time the problem is the sender in the tank or wiring. Virtually never is the gauge bad.

    Water pump questions

A lack of a thermostat will cause overheating. The water circulates so fast it does not have time to pickup the heat and carry it away. We are in cold winter country and run 195 thermostats year around. An engine must be up to temperature to be efficient and to run right.

    6.2 years to avoid?

Replace the head gaskets now. Drive it 1,000 miles and re-torque the head gaskets. You will be amazed at how much you turn these bolts. Then drive it 5,000 miles and do it again. Keep doing this until you get no additional movement in the bolts. Now, it will run a long, long, time. I have taken...

How much more power can a 5.3L make without hurting road manners or gas mileage?

Cold air intakes are great but must be done right. The usual cheap ones hurt power and mileage as they suck in hot under hood air instead of getting it from the outer fender. Make sure they get their air from outside the engine bay or you are paying to hurt your performance.

    Torque converter 700r4 and TH400

The 29 mpg was not normal. But it ran consistently at 20 mpg unless it was ball busting cold and running on pure #1.

    C vs K 8 bolt rims

Ford is well known for changing things at the drop of a hat. There was no consistency what people wanted. Chevy stuck with the small and big block and people loved it. You can put a 502 BB in the same place a 194 I6 came out of and use the same transmission and bell housing. Ford would put a...

    C vs K 8 bolt rims

The newer GM C and K 8 bolt rims are different than the old. It was somewhere around 2021 that these changed. Prior to this change the majority interchanged.

    Tranny's Bunghole!!

In 1973 GM quit putting petcock's in the radiators of the new square bodies. It cost 25 cents extra to get the radiator with the petcock. GM got so much crap from the mechanics that they soon started putting them in again.

    Torque converter 700r4 and TH400

1981 GMC 1/2T 4x2 with the 6.2 diesel and 2.42 gears with the 700R4. The 700R4 died a miserable death so went to a 400 Turbo. The mileage did not change. I got 29.2 mpg with the 400 with the wind blowing at my tail both ways. Hard to beat that.

I want to drive an '89 suburban 700 miles home, what should I know?

Figure on driving it to the local oil change place. Have them change oil, filter, check all the fluids, air up the tires and also change the fuel filter. The 1st 100 miles will generally find any problems. If the belts look questionable, pickup a new one along the way. It is guaranteed that what...

    erratic fuel gauge

I bought the same Chineseum crap and have the same issue. Almost empty by gauge takes 20 gallons at the pump with a known 42 gallon tank. Gauges rarely ever give problems. Wiring or sender is the usual suspect.

6.2L Diesel - swap to J-code intake or not?

I have overhauled a number of these Roosa Master DB diesel pumps. Timing is critical to keep them running smooth. Only a couple degrees off can make a big difference. To easily check timing, with the engine warmed up, mash the throttle to the floor and hold it a couple seconds. If the governor...

    6.2l diesel electrical problem!!!

My 82 GMC with the 6.2 diesel had a half million miles on it with the original glow plug controller and starter. The starter was overhauled twice. You must have the brace from the end of the stater to the block to prevent breaking starter nose cones. It only had Delco batteries and the battery...

    Voltage Drop

I cannot agree more. A good battery with good grounds will keep things running well for a long time. Low voltage kills electronics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Windshield Woes

I bought mine for a 90 Suburban last summer for $89.00 from Auto Body Specialties out of Sioux Falls, SD. Tinted on top, no antennae and a rear view mirror. If I can buy for this price, you should get close, in your area. It took me less than an hour to put it in with the tool to install the...

    Adapt 4x4 Th350 in Place of 700r4

We bought many of these aluminum adapters for the 4x4 350's and cut the tail shaft in the chop saw. Never had a problem. I had an 82 GMC C15 4x2 6.2 diesel with the 2.42 rear end. I threw away the garbage 700R4 and went to a 400 turbo. Never hurt the mileage a bit. The 700 in overdrive with...

Haynes manual suggest silicone dielectric grease for ignition module?

No, this product protects something from heat. It is the opposite of what is needed. You need a product that easily allows heat to move through it. I use the stuff used in the computer world. Mine is Arctic Silver, high density polysynthetic silver thermal compound. The module generates heat...

Sac religious bench swap.. Hear me out.

I have a recovered blue seat but it is in South Dakota. I do seat cover work as a hobby. All the square body bench seats from 1973 on up were mostly the same. Some were solid backs, for crew cabs and Suburbans, some had folding backs and some had locking backs. There was also the normal seat and...

95 Chevy Caprice transmission quirks... suggestions?

I drove an 87 9C1 Caprice from new to 150,000 miles. These are the best driving cars in the world. Would hit overdrive at 132 mph. Radar verified. What a car! The only one better is the newer Holden version of the 9C1 with the LS engine and still RWD.

Opinions please on possible use for zinc oil additive

They call those, Chonda's? Chinese knockoffs that are poor quality and are prone to fail. I agree that a rod knock will not go away. I would suggest a quality generator powered by a Honda, Briggs or Tecumseh, etc will give far better service. Any of the diesel oils have higher zinc as they are...

    Belt Squeak

If the PS pump pulley has been removed in the past, make sure it is lined up with the rest of the pulleys or it will wear on one side and chirp. This is especially true with serpentine belts. The pulley is usually flush with the end of the shaft. Dayco makes a laser tool to check this.

    Electrical Issue in Wife's Car

Have seen many with a bad ground at the frame/body from the battery. Especially after using the blower fan/headlights and other heavy electrical loads. If you have a temp gun, run it over the ground cables after the lights come on. Any heat means resistance and you want none.
