83’ Blazer: In need of a factory muffler heat shield

The heat shields for the muffler are not needed as much as the Cat. The Cat gets very hot and much hotter than the mufflers. Leave the Cat heat shield alone. You can run 3" singles and be close to dual 2 1/2 up to 300 hp. Never knew Hooker made exhaust manifolds. They should be good! My 90...

Backup light socket for 1982 Chevy C10

If you put a 1157 bulb into an 1156 socket, that can turn on both circuits within the bulb, brake light and tail lights, at the same time and melt the housing. Check the other light and hopefully that has not been tampered with. You can get either 1156 one wire or 1157 two wire sockets. The...

    Just curious.

How many miles on the engine? New head and intake gaskets won't hurt a thing. Have a machine shop check out the heads too before you put them back on. They do crack.

    Bench Seat Rebuild

GM made the normal duty seat that came in most trucks. Then they made the heavy duty seat that had firmer foam. You sat higher as you didn't sink into the foam. Unsure what the RPO code was?

454 getting pulled from suburban.. new cam?

More messes have been made with cam changes than anything else. Call the cam company, answer their questions and go by their recommendations to get what you want. It won't work if you guess? I have got some of the best mileage out of a big block over the small block. 454, 4 speed, 308 gears with...

    Transfer case

A friend had a 454 in a square body Blazer with the 203 full time transfer case. He would kick the transfer case into low lock and drag race off the stop lights. If the chain held, there was nothing that could beat it off the line. If the chain didn't hold, he coasted to the side of the road and...

Finally have this girl home, now what?

I brought home a 90 R1500 GMC which spent it's first 20 years in a heated garage and done funeral duty. The body is perfect. It had two dead misses and needed head gaskets. The windshield, headliner, radiator, alternator, water pump, heater core and fuel pump have been replaced. I also had a...

    Leaking head gasket?

These used a steel shim head gasket so retorquing the head would not hurt anything. Getting at the lower row of bolts under the exhaust manifold will be very tough though. The oil pressure exceeds the coolant pressure so you can now have oil in the coolant. When engine is off, you should be able...

How do you feel about this?

Then it is a garbage picture as the bottom of the lifter should be bright and shiny. That looks dull, black as if it has not touched the cam.

1986 C10- Is it reliable enough for a daily driver?

We drive a 90 4x2 Suburban as a daily driver. With the 7004R. 157,000 miles with a new engine at 110,000. It spent the first 25 years, mostly in a heated garage, as a mover for a funeral home. Zero rust and am always getting complements on how nice it looks. I overhauled the engine, just put a...

How do you feel about this?

That lifter in the picture is totally junk. It needs a new cam and lifters.

    Best aftermarket antenna option

My 1990 Suburban came with the fender antenna and not the windshield one. I am kind of in the middle of nowhere and this antenna works great. The oem radio was junk so I replaced with a Honda Civic one that works perfect. Square body radios were well known for dropping channels.

    Dim Dash Lights

You do know that turning the light switch left/right makes the dash lights brighter or dimmer?

    Parts suppliers, apples to apples

The manager of the local O'Reilly's just resigned to go to work for a local manufacturer. No nights, weekends, holidays with more money and better benefits. I hate to lose him but I don't blame him for the move. There is no one else in the store that I trust. It is sad!

    08 Cobalt

Dorman has turned into a Chineseum graveyard too. They are using cheap overseas parts instead of the quality known for years ago. If Dorman makes it, there was a problem with the original but they are no longer the fix they used to be.

Air Conditioning leak checking / finding information sharing thread

This is very simple. If you want to run it, then do. If you don't want to run it, then don't.

    Heat temp gun/correct temp sensor/etc.

Buy the sender for the 250 I6. The sender should match the truck and not the engine.

Anyone who doesnt have a service manual read this.

I am fortunate to be able to write those cheap manuals, only better. I still may pull a book once in awhile, especially for torques. It is no shame. If you are not sure, look it up. When you get to the point when you know most of it, them your body starts to revolt. Wrench and enjoy the results.

How should I solve this starter problem

Percussion maintenance may free a stuck brush with no troubles ever again. Battery cables are rarely looked at but should be. The resistance test tells it all. Do the voltage drop test or look at the length of the cable and ends with a temp gun after starting.

Air Conditioning leak checking / finding information sharing thread

I have found that replacing both Schrader valves in the high and low service ports can help a lot. Those can leak a lot and can easily be changed. I am using mostly dye in my units. It seems to work the best but then I use the soapy water after zeroed in on where the leak is.

    6.2 years to avoid?

I never had torque to yield head bolts. Mainly used ARP studs.

Dual tank diesel, where to put fuel pump?

My 82 6.2 had a lift pump on the engine that worked well for 1/4 million miles. I modified the fuel gauges so I could see both tanks at all times but the switch still changed tank left or right. I ran pure #1 in one tank and premium #2 in the other in the winter. I gets ball bustin cold here.
