If a Volvo of that vintage sounds like a rod is knocking, get a timing gear set and change out the cam gear. it was a bakelite gear with an aluminum or steel hub, the bakelite would wobble loose from the hub and make a funny knocking noise. Been thinking radiator and battery. I know that's a big chunk of change. I`m going back to eork tomorrow so time will build on the pay clock then it wont feel like such a burden when I make the purchase. Other wise I`d charge the components then have that bill hanging over My head. :Caffeine... -

Welcome John. I just want to add, that is not the old 350-V8 diesel from the Oldsmobile days of the past. That is an entirely new design, of the times, it will be the 6.2 liter V-8 diesel. Hydroboost crazy
Watch out for the boost pumps with the variable orifice valve on them, about 1995 and newer, You can tell them apart, they will have two wires sticking out of the fitting on the back of the pump. Diagnosing a transfer box noise ?
Check differential input spindle bearings. Remove differential cover and check side bearings in ring gear carrier. Had similar happen on a 87 K1500, vent hose had broke off, allowed moist air into housing, directly routed on top of side bearing, humidity rusted the bearing out. from heat too...- MrMarty51

A pry bar between the pivot of the rod and the drag link, pry for all its worth then with a larger size hammer, three or four pounder, beat the piss out of the drag link where the stud goes through. Just be careful that when it pops free You dont hit Your arm or hand on some poor unsuspecting...- MrMarty51
